  • With the financial support of the German Corporation for International Development (GIZ), CSR Europe is launching ‘Extractives and Development’.

  • This new collaborative project aims at ensuring the sustainable and responsible sourcing of raw materials in the electric vehicle (EV) battery value chain.

  • JOIN THE EUROPEAN PACT FOR SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY AND OUR COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE “BEYOND DUE DILIGENCETO FOSTER SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAINS

In the transition towards a low-carbon economy, conventional vehicles will be exchanged with more environmentally friendly electric vehicles. In this process, it is important to ensure that critical raw materials are sourced in a responsible and sustainable way.

Starting from July 2020, CSR Europe will address this challenge with “Extractives and Development”.  The new project, financed by the German Corporation for International Development (GIZ), aims at:

  • Improving the mining conditions in the electric vehicle battery value chain,

  • Ensuring sustainable and responsible sourcing of critical raw materials in Africa

Due to our expertise in capacity-building programmes, CSR Europe will work with local large, medium and small-sized mines, smelters, refiners and suppliers to strengthen their capacity building on responsible sourcing and due diligence practices. CSR Europe will facilitate:

  • The development of Local Mining Sustainability Networks for responsible sourcing of raw materials

  • The delivery of trainings to address the local challenges of the raw materials sector

The final goal is to enable long-term capacity building activities for the local companies and stakeholders to achieve systematic improvements on the mining conditions in the electric vehicle battery value chain.

Collaboration is key to effectively implement sustainable and responsible sourcing.

Many challenges are common across sectors and different stakeholders and can be solved only with a collective effort. To scale up your individual effort, we invite you - companies and industry federations - to join the European Pact for Sustainable Industry. Under the umbrella of the Pact, you will be able to scale-up methodologies to ensure responsible sourcing at industry level thanks to the collective experience of your value-chain peers, competitors, customers, and experienced stakeholders.

Corporate members, sector associations and initiatives are also invited to join the webinars of our community of practice “Beyond Due Diligence” to learn from their peers and discover the entry-level and advanced best-practices in responsible sourcing or raw materials.
