On April 30, ITOCHU Corporation came to an agreement with Imabari Shipbuilding, MAN Energy Solutions, Mitsui E&S Machinery, ClassNK and ITOCHU ENEX on jointly developing zero-emission ships.

As international momentum towards the transition to a decarbonized society is growing, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the shipping industry in 2018. The strategy sets out to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work by at least 50% by 2050 (compared to 2008 levels).

In order to achieve this goal, the early development of zero-emission ships is anticipated with ammonia as a prime candidate for a suitable zero-emission, alternative fuel.
