Leveraging the Value of Sustainability: Insights from Our Latest Focus Group
Earlier this year, CSR Europe, together with Shell and a group of leading companies, set out to answer a focused but fundamental question: how can the "S" in ESG deliver measurable business value?
The outcome of that work is now available in our latest report — Leveraging the Value of Sustainability — developed on the basis of one-to-one interviews and a dedicated focus group with companies including Shell, Toyota, Coca-Cola, BASF, Solvay, and Hitachi Energy..
What We Are Seeing Across Companies
Many organisations have made meaningful progress on sustainability. Yet most continue to face the same persistent challenges. There remains a strong focus on compliance and risk mitigation, with limited connection to revenue, performance, or competitiveness. Internal alignment across functions remains weak, and translating the "S" of ESG into clear business terms continues to prove difficult.
Through our value creation framework, we identified the key shifts needed to unlock sustainability's potential across five critical areas: governance systems, strategic focus, human capital, products and services and innovation, and external ecosystems.
What This Means in Practice
Through this work, CSR Europe supported participating companies to benchmark their current approaches against peers, structure internal discussions on value creation, connect sustainability initiatives to core business drivers, and align functions spanning sustainability, finance, procurement, and communications. This type of cross-functional, business-focused engagement is becoming increasingly relevant as companies move from understanding regulation to implementing meaningful change.
How CSR Europe Can Support Your Organisation
This focus group is one example of the tailored support CSR Europe offers its members alongside its core service areas, which include Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (CS3D/CSDDD), EU Sustainability Compliance including CSRD, and structured stakeholder dialogue at the EU level.
Tailored engagements can cover a wide range of priorities, from linking sustainability initiatives to business value and performance, to structuring governance and KPIs across functions, facilitating peer groups and executive-level exchanges, supporting supplier and value chain discussions, and mapping human rights risks and opportunities across sectors.
Each engagement is co-developed with the company, based on its specific priorities and level of maturity.
