CSR Europe to Host Stakeholder Dialogue on the Circularity of Composite Materials

On 8 September, CSR Europe will welcome businesses, research institutes, NGOs, sector/industry associations, and academia for a Stakeholder Dialogue aimed at sharing insights and experiences for the creation of a blueprint on how to increase the circularity of composite materials. The event takes place in the framework of CSR Europe’s “New Materials and Circular Economy Accelerator Think Tank” run in collaboration with Leonardo and aimed at innovating the design and end-of-life treatment of applications made of composite materials.

Carbon and glass fibers, while heavily used in a wide variety of sectors – ranging from the aerospace and automotive industry to the wind energy, construction, and marine sectors – are still challenging to recycle due to the difficulties in separating the fibre from the matrix. Decreasing their environmental footprint is crucial to advancing Europe’s journey toward climate neutrality. As the European Commission accelerates on the delivery of the Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan, CSR Europe and Leonardo’s Think Tank wants to lead the way for companies to transition from the traditional “take-make-dispose” approach to a circular economy that will reduce pressure on natural resources, eliminate waste and pollution, and create jobs.

The Blueprint will be launched at the high-level plenary “The Challenge of Circularity in the Green Transition” at the European SDG Summit 2022, on 11 October at 11:30-13:00 CET.  Confirmed speakers include Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, and Alessandro Profumo, CEO Leonardo and President of the AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe.
