Context
This Leadership Roundtable caters to one of the major obstacles of sustainability transition across the value chains, that value and responsibility is considered to be unevenly distributed. It is concervable that, each actor along the value chain — end manufacturers, tier-1 suppliers, upstream material producers, and non-EU actors — is facing different cost and risk burdens, which makes everyone reluctant to commit more, whether in investment or in value sharing. Rather than asking who should pay more, this learning lab wants to understand what each actor's actual problems are, and what could be done — especially by joining forces across the value chain — to at least partially solve them. Rather than dwelling on the difficulties, we want to devote this learning lab to solutions: we invite companies to analyze and share what has actually worked for them — which burden-sharing arrangements, co-investment models, or collaborative mechanisms have proven successful — and which constructive approaches they believe are feasible and worth scaling, particularly through joint action across the value chain. To make that conversation productive, we hope to clarify what "value", "responsibility", and "cost" really mean in the transition, so that solutions can be discussed on common ground. And, we think the discussion should be situated in the current EU regulatory and industrial policy context (CBAM, the Omnibus simplification, and the Clean Industrial Deal), which is actively reshaping how the burdens and values are distributed.
We plan to pose to the attending companies questions such as: what are the cost and risk burdens that you are facing; how do you problematize the challenges (can they be solve by maret competition, by industrial policies, or by supply chain collaboration).
