THE CHALLENGE

In the transition to a climate-neutral society, conventional vehicles will be progressively phased out in favour of more environmentally friendly electric vehicles (EVs).

However, the production of EVs and in particular their batteries, requires various critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, copper nickel, graphite, manganese, and rare earths.

Responsible sourcing and supply chain due diligence remain a challenge due to:

  • Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) risks associated to their extraction.

  • Price volatility

OUR APPROACH

CSR Europe will bring together large, medium and small-sized mines, smelters, refiners, and their suppliers to strengthen responsible sourcing and due diligence practices in the EV battery value chain.

The project is carried out with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

WHAT WE DELIVER

  • Capacity building training for local mining companies and their suppliers

  • Local sustainability networks in two African countries
