How to Foster Sustainable Supply Chains?

Within an estimated population of 450 million people working in global supply chains, the number of those facing reduced income or job loss are dramatically increasing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. To be credible in its efforts to enhance the livelihoods of farmers, miners, and workers, the European Union must strive for an integrated, inclusive, and progressive European approach on due diligence that includes ambitious accompanying measures to support the involvement of producers at all levels.

At the high-level plenary "Resilient and Inclusive Supply Chain", taking place on 14 October at 11:30-13:00 CET, CSR Europe will test how much the European Union is willing to go beyond corporate compliance with the upcoming due diligence legislation. The challenge is two-fold:

  • Building a wider, level playing field on due diligence at the European and international level;

  • Empowering actors across the value chain and industry federations to develop collaborative solutions that can enhance the livelihoods of people on the ground.

Guest speakers include European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders - whose team oversees the upcoming EU due diligence law together with European Commissioner for Internal Market Breton – Kerstin Jorna, Director General of DG GROW at the European Commission, Koen Doens, Director General of DG INTPA at the European Commission and Oliver De Schutter, Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights at the UNHR.

At the event, we will:

  • Explore the role of due diligence in fostering transparency and ensuring human rights protection

  • Dialogue on the importance of cooperation and investment to overcome sustainability challenges.

  • Engage different stakeholders – including the Entreprise General du Cobalt, Daimler, Solidaridad Europe, Volvo Group, Bayer - on how to include environmental and human rights in the supply chain processes.

The dialogue on supply chain sustainability will continue in the afternoon, with the  European SDG Roundtable co-organised with Bridgestone on "Supply Chain Sustainability: from Due Diligence to Engagement and Investment" at 14:00-15:30 CET.

The sessions are part of the European SDG Summit 2021, taking place online from 11-14 October. The Summit will bring together 5000+ Sustainability Leaders in 4 High-Level plenaries and 26 European and National SDG Roundtables to accelerate the journey towards climate neutrality and the adoption of an inclusive approach to the green and digital transition. The event is open and free for everyone. You can register here to have access to all the 30 sessions in programme.
