CSR Europe Set to Deliver Sustainability Atelier in South Africa
The two-day workshop will be delivered on 10-11 May in collaboration with the Minerals Council South Africa, and benefit stakeholders involved in the Manganese and Iron Ore mining operations in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JG) District Municipality.
The training takes place in the framework of the Extractives for Sustainability project funded by the German Development Agency GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
On 10-11 May 2023, CSR Europe will deliver a sustainability atelier to foster capacity-building in the electric vehicle battery supply chain in Kathu, South Africa. The training – which will be delivered in collaboration with the Minerals Council South Africa - will benefit contractors, local government, traditional authorities, and civil society groups involved in the Manganese and Iron Ore mining operations in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JG) District Municipality.
The objective of this two-day workshop is to:
Bring together leading mining companies and suppliers in a collaborative approach to learn and share with each other from common sustainability issues in the Manganese and Iron Ore mining industry.
Exchange and learn from respective experiences.
Present case studies on collaborative approaches or potential best practices on common challenges.
Explore potential avenues for joint action
Expanding on the results of the stakeholder dialogue held in November 2022, in Kathu, the Atelier will focus on two key directives for action:
Local socio-economic development and the contribution of mining houses as well as the development of secondary economies and SMEs in the region.
Skills development in the 4th industrial revolution era and in the context of the “Just Transition” focusing on the needed skills in a modernizing industry.
The Atelier is a key milestone of the 2023 programme of the Extractives for Sustainability project, funded by the German Development Agency GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and aimed at creating a local sustainability network that promotes and supports responsible sourcing in the electric vehicle battery supply chain. A network will support the exchange of good practices, experiences, and the development of joint activities to improve procurement conditions. In the long run, a joint effort will have a greater impact than individual companies' efforts.
