What is the future of corporate net-zero targets?

On the way to a fully decarbonized economy, companies are currently lining up to declare their net-zero aspirations. More than 1,500 companies worldwide have committed to taking climate action through the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Many companies complement their SBTi ambitions with net-zero commitments in the long-term (until 2050).

While science-based targets are well-defined and highly accepted among external stakeholders, it is still largely unclear what different actors (both on state and company level) mean by net-zero targets. Which emission sources are included? Which role does emission compensation or “offsetting” play? How are fairness concerns (between different countries and companies with different historical footprints and technical capabilities) integrated? Are long-term targets backed up by interim targets and concrete implementation plans?

This session will gather a wide range of European business leaders to discuss:

  • How they approach climate target setting in their companies.

  • Whether a common standard for net-zero targets would be desirable from a corporate point of view (e.g., to enhance comparability).

  • And if so, which requirements should such a standard fulfill?

JOIN THIS EUROPEAN SDG ROUNDTABLE TO:

  •  Learn about the differences between various types of corporate climate targets.

  • Discuss the perception of climate targets by external stakeholders and the general public.

  • Explore a common global standard for net-zero targets.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

  • Business leaders.

  • Investors.

  • Anyone interested in net-zero targets.
