What is the future of corporate sustainability reporting? And how are the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the EU Taxonomy changing corporate disclosure?

Stakeholders are increasingly asking companies to disclose how their business and operations impact employees, customers, and society at large. Transparent and reliable corporate reporting on how Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) issues are managed is increasingly important.

This evolution is mirrored by EU policymakers. New EU legislative developments, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the EU Taxonomy, require companies to disclose information on the way they operate and manage social and environmental challenges.

This helps investors, civil society organisations, consumers, policy makers and other stakeholders to evaluate the non-financial performance of large companies and encourages these companies to develop a responsible approach to business.

However, EFRAG’s recent reports on “How to improve climate-related reporting”, and “Proposals for a relevant and dynamic EU sustainability standard-setting’’, show that although companies have access to a range of reporting frameworks, disclosure practices still lack transparent and relevant information. If companies want to attract customers and investors, change is needed now.
