Besides climate change, the loss of biodiversity is seen as the second greatest danger for the world's human population. Almost all businesses rely in any kind of way on resources, provided by nature. These resources are based on an intact functioning system of biodiversity. The loss of natural species therefore directly endangers the resources of all businesses.
Although industry is accustomed to dealing with broad environmental concerns such as global warming, the biodiversity issue raises regional, local, and site-specific concerns all at the same time. Industry can proactively address these issues of scope and scale by cross-sectorial collaboration with businesses and key stakeholders on their industrial sites.
It is within this context that CSR Europe is launching a business-led collaborative platform on Biodiversity & Industry, to take concrete action towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (in preparations for the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework) and the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy to halt the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the EU.
The focus of this platform is to explore how companies can collectively enhance the net positive biodiversity impacts of their industrial sites and across their value chains.
Together with business practitioners, stakeholders and policymakers, the Business and Industry platform aims to:
Steer working groups to exchange learnings;
Pool expertise together in the form of stakeholder dialogues to assess impacts and drive concrete actions;
Organise policy round tables to drive reforms and raise awareness.
