Alcatel-Lucent demonstrates up to 27 percent power consumption reduction on base stations deployed by China Mobile
Alcatel-Lucent has announced a significant enhancement to its GSM/EDGE mobile networking portfolio that can reduce power consumption by up to 27 percent, offering energy and cost savings for mobile operators. The power reductions were demonstrated during a field trial with China Mobile in the country’s Jiangsu province. This new feature, called Dynamic Power Save (DPS) enables the base station to monitor traffic activity on the network and when there is no information to transmit, even for very short periods of time, the amplifier is switched off… Read more

BT and Football Foundation team up to build ICT skills using the power of sport
BT and the Football Foundation, the UK’s largest sports charity, have joined forces to launch an initiative which uses the power of football to help tackle digital exclusion and improve communications skills in the UK. The Communicating for Success (CfS) project will give up to 200 local schoolchildren the chance to combine physical activity with a unique way of learning key communications skills across a number of sporting and learning centres in the area. Pupils from four schools will take part in physical and classroom activities, so while experiencing the challenge of football, athletics, gymnastics and rowing, they will also learn about the wider skills required to be a success in these fields… Read more

IBM launches Strategic Carbon Management consulting offering
IBM has launched a new Strategic Carbon Management consulting offering designed to assist clients in developing strategies to better manage and reduce energy use and CO2 emissions while improving efficiency and lowering costs throughout their operations. By implementing the strategic recommendations, clients could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 50 percent – ranging from 15-20 percent for travel to up to 90 percent for datacenters – with corresponding reductions in cost, IBM says. Sustainable companies outperform peers during financial crisis, study says
A.T. Kearney announced findings in a new report which showed that companies focused on sustainability outperformed their peers by 15% during the financial crisis, Environmental Leader reports. The report, titled "Green Winners: The Performance of Sustainability-focused Companies in the Financial Crisis" looked at 99 companies with a strong commitment to sustainability as defined by the Sustainability Index and the Goldman Sachs Sustain Focus List.Over the six months from May through November 2008, the study found that in 16 of the 18 industries studied, companies committed to sustainability averaged $650 million more than the industry average in protected market capitalization per company… Read more

Nestlé WellNes Centre inaugurated in Vevey
In January, Nestlé inaugurated its new WellNes Centre at the international headquarters in Vevey. Meeting the highest environmental standards, the WellNes Centre is designed to provide Nestlé employees with services which contribute to their health and wellbeing - inspired by the company's nutrition, health and wellness strategy. The two-storey building houses two restaurants, a coffee lounge, a gym and a medical centre for Nestlé employees. Carbon Disclosure Project launches first Italy report in collaboration with Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena and Kyoto Club
Ninety-three percent of Italian companies say that climate change can present an opportunity for business, according to the Carbon Disclosure Project – Italy Report, the first publication of its kind looking at the implications of climate change on the investment decisions from large Italian companies. The report, in collaboration with Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena and Kyoto Club, was launched in Rome on 13 February 2009. Roads to Respect reaches out to 14 EU countries
In its third year, the Roads to Respect (R2R) project is expanding to four new participant countries, bringing up their total number to 14. 20 years Volkswagen Community Trust
The Volkswagen Community Trust has just celebrated its 20th birthday in the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage, South Africa. The celebration was joined by a high delegation of Volkswagen's World Works Council headed by its Chairman Bernd Osterloh. In 2008 the Community Trust has donated around 600.000 euros for the improvement of local authorities and for the support of self-help, support and advocacy organisations in the area around Port Elisabeth.
