Foretica and Madrid Chamber of Commerce hosted 'The pharmaceutical industry and CSR'
On 23 October, "The pharmaceutical industry and CSR" event was held by Forética and Madrid Chamber of Commerce. It was the first in a series of sectoral workshops that aim at bringing together CSR pioneers in different sectors in order to discuss sustainability challenges and share best CSR practices. The event hosted two panel discussions that analyzed the main challenges facing the sector, and furthermore the CSR tools of companies in order to respond to these challenges. Climate change as a business opportunity - CSR Forum Finland
On 5 November, Finnish Business & Society hosted a CSR Forum exploring the business opportunities associated with climate change. The event gathered together 140 experts from companies, NGOs, academia and the media. The programme included keynote speeches from high-profile business leaders and four workshops focusing on investment & insurance, business models, NGO cooperation, and marketing & communications. Biodegradable packaging for Interceptor® mosquito
BASF has developed a fully biodegradable packaging system for its Interceptor® insecticide-treated mosquito nets. The new packaging concept solves the disposal issue which is pressing in many African countries. It also offers improvements suggested by partners working in regions where malaria is endemic. BASF will deliver several thousand nets with the new packaging in the coming months. If customer feedback is positive, all Interceptor nets will be sold in this environmentally friendly packaging… Read more

Room for improvement exists in corporate sustainability reporting on gender
Despite the presence of gender-related indicators in the sustainability reporting guidelines issued by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), few companies report sufficiently on gender-related issues, according to a guide entitled Embedding Gender in Sustainability Reporting. The guide was released by GRI and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) at the CSR Asia Summit 2009. The guide suggests that integrating gender perspectives into sustainability reporting can help companies publicly demonstrate their accountability to women, gain recognition for their efforts from workers, investors, and consumers, and help stakeholders learn how the operations of companies contribute to gender equality… Read more

Supply-chain labor and human rights policies are becoming the norm for large cap companies
Some 28% of global companies - including nearly half of those with market capitalizations of more than $10 billion - have labor and human rights (LHR) policies covering their global supply chains. However, materially fewer have established follow-up monitoring and enforcement procedures. Geographically, LHR supply-chain policies are close to the norm among European companies, but the United States and Asia lag behind. These findings are contained in a new study that is the first publicly available benchmarking analysis of global LR policies, and covers more than 2500 global companies… Read more

Panasonic supports the Wildlife Trust by heathland scrub clearance
As part of this year's Eco Relay activity, the Panasonic Group at Bracknell successfully held the BBOWT (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust) Family Volunteer Day on 24th October. The Wildlife Trust, which has just recently celebrated its own 50th anniversary, had offered Panasonic the opportunity to volunteer for a day to help in heathland scrub clearance. Bankers will have to prove their ethics to land top jobs
Britain's senior bankers will face new tests to see if they are ethical enough to run large financial institutions, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) said yesterday. Those who fail would be vetoed from top appointments. Hector Sants, the chief executive of the City regulator, announced an intensification of the blackballing process that has already led to 18 candidates for senior banking roles being rejected in the past year. While vetoes have previously centred on concerns about financial competence and expertise, the emphasis in future would also be on the ability to foster an ethical culture in their organisations… Read more

Dow India & BMVSS Flag Off the ‘Jaipur Foot on Wheels’ Initiative in Maharashtra
Dow Chemical International Pvt. Ltd. (Dow India) in association with Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) flagged-off the Maharashtra phase of its multi-state ‘Jaipur Foot on Wheels’ initiative - a mobile vehicle fully-fitted to run Jaipur Foot camps in rural areas across India for the distribution of free limbs, calipers and crutches on October 28, 2009. Dow India’s 2009 financial donation of Rs 1 Crore funded the vehicle and will help provide prosthetics limbs and calipers to more than 5000 physically challenged people in India this year… Read more

EU 30% CO2 Emissions Target: Achievable and Affordable
Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU can be cut to 30% below 1990 levels by 2020 (45% by 2030) based on an analysis of the emission reduction potential and costs to society of 650 technologies in ten major sectors. The European Union can achieve a 30% cut in greenhouse gas emissions at practically zero net cost. Simply replacing all energy-related equipment at the end of its economic life with low-carbon technologies, paid for thanks to lower energy bills, could almost halve the EU's greenhouse gas emissions within two decades.
