Dow building insulation products achieve Cradle To Cradle® certification
Dow Building Solutions has completed a rigorous, external assessment of its building insulation products conducted by MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC), a global sustainability consulting and product certification firm. Many of Dow's building insulation products achieved Cradle to Cradle® Certification, a process that assesses products for their ingredients' human health, environmental health and recyclability profiles. European year to combat poverty launched in Madrid
The European Commission and Spanish EU Presidency has launched the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion under the slogan 'Stop Poverty Now!' at an event in Madrid on 21 January. Recent EU statistics indicate that 17% of people across the EU (almost 80 million Europeans) currently live below the poverty threshold. Greens embrace enzymes in climate change fight
Industrial biotechnology is gaining supporters among environmentalists as a way to make significant cuts in greenhouse-gas emissions and eventually move to a society free from fossil fuels. The lofty idea behind industrial, or white, biotechnology is to use nature's own ingredients to solve industrial problems. White biotech industries use enzymes - proteins that speed up chemical reactions - for various applications to increase efficiency of energy and raw-material use and eventually replace fossil fuels. Accountability Rating 2009: continuing improvment for the TITAN Group
For the second year in succession TITAN has been placed first in the annual corporate accountability ratings - Accountability Rating Greece 2009. This year the Group was awarded a total score of 64.3, up 4.3 on last year's rating of 60. Accountability Rating employs an evaluation system of 170 different criteria in its examination of data published by companies and available to all interested parties. Vodafone Qatar and Alcatel-Lucent launch the first “green” mobile base station in Qatar
Vodafone Qatar and Alcatel-Lucent has announced the deployment of the first hybrid powered Base Station in Qatar, using an integration of solar and wind energy. This initiative is part of a wider green technology program led by Vodafone Group to deploy green energy sources in all of its affiliates worldwide. Member companies contribute to relief efforts in Haiti
The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the Republic of Haiti on Tuesday 12 January is the most powerful to hit the island nation in a century. The Haitian ambassador to the United States called it a catastrophe for the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation, and the country's authorities recorded as many as 70,000 deaths in the first week. Following the earthquake, governments and individuals around the globe are donating money to aid the people of Haiti. Investors call on governments to act on climate change Now
Arguing that “investors, businesses, and governments cannot wait for a global treaty before taking action,” investor groups representing $13 trillion in assets met at the UN in January, and released the Investor Statement on Catalyzing Investment in a Low-Carbon Economy, which details steps to take to encourage investor participation in a low-carbon economy. Take a break, it could save your life
Office workers beware: long periods of sitting at your desk may be a killer. Scientists have identified a new threat from our sedentary lifestyles that they call "muscular inactivity". Sitting still for long periods of time leads to the build up of substances in the blood that are harmful to health. And exercise alone won't shift them. Survey highlights 'crisis of ethics'
More than two thirds of people believe the current economic crisis is also a crisis of ethics and values, according to a World Economic Forum (WEF) opinion poll. The survey, based on 130,000 Facebook members from ten G20 economies, also found that only a quarter of people believe that large, multi-national companies have a "values-driven" approach to their sectors. The proportion rose to 40pc for small and medium-sized businesses. Half of respondents believed that universal values exist. Read more (Telegraph)
