The European Commission EU 2020 strategy emphasizes CSR

In a Communication entitled “Europe 2020 – A strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth” and published on March 3rd, the European Commission announced that “At EU level, the Commission will work to renew the EU strategy to promote Corporate Social Responsibility as a key element in ensuring long term employee and consumer trust.” This is included in Chapter 2 on “Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive Growth” and is one of the 7 Flagship Initiatives dealing with “An industrial policy for globalisation era” (page 15)… Read more

ArcelorMittal Sestao, Spain, wins first prize in the European Business Awards for the Environment

The Basque Government in Spain awarded ArcelorMittal Sestao the first prize in the Basque Section of the 2009 2010 European Business Awards for the Environment, in recognition of its efforts in the area of sustainable and environmental management. ArcelorMittal’s WCM (World Class Manufacturing) methodology focuses on strategies that form the key pillars for the global management of the organisation, guided by environmental and corporate citizenship criteria. ArcelorMittal USA receives 3rd ENERGY STAR® honour

On March 1st, ArcelorMittal USA was selected, for the 3rd consecutive year, as a 2010 ENERGY STAR® Sustained Excellence Award winner for Energy Management. Each year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy honour organisations that have made a contribution to protecting the environment through energy efficiency. ArcelorMittal also worked to spread the word about energy conservation. In 2009, this included a celebration of Energy Awareness Month in October. During the month, each employee received an ENERGY STAR® partner sticker for their office area or hardhat, reminding employees to be energy conscious throughout the day… Read more

Survey: More Older Workers Reporting to Younger Bosses

CareerBuilder has released the results of a survey showing that four out of ten workers over the age of 35 are working for a younger boss. Looking at the challenges posed by the mixing of the generations, CareerBuilder reports that 16% of workers ages 25-34 said they find it difficult to take direction from a boss younger than them, while 13% of workers ages 35-44 said the same. United Kingdom: Report Released on Evaluating Return to Work Efforts on Behalf of 50+

The UK's Department for Work and Pensions has released a report reviewing the literature to provide greater insight into how the Department's back to work provision supports the over-50s return to work has been published. The main findings of “50+ Back to work evidence review and indicative guide for secondary data analysis” prepared by Sandra Vegeris, Deborah Smeaton and Melahat Sahin-Dikmen, Policy Studies Institute, are related to advisory support and training. Dow Wetlands Win International Award

Employees at The Dow Wetlands Preserve received international recognition for their contributions to wildlife habitat conservation at the Wildlife Habitat Council’s (WHC) Annual Symposium, "Evergreen: A Celebration of Conservation in a Changing World." Dow demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship and increasing native biodiversity by achieving Wildlife at Work and Corporate Lands for Learning (CLL) re-certification at The Dow Wetlands Preserve. The wildlife team works to improve the tidal wetland habitat by controlling invasive hyacinth and monitors bird populations by providing a census form to qualified birders visiting the site… Read more

New ILO's report "Women in labour markets: Measuring progress and identifying challenges"

Despite signs of progress in gender equality over the past 15 years, there is still a significant gap between women and men in terms of job opportunities and quality of employment, according to a new report by the International Labour Office (ILO), entitled "Women in labour markets : Measuring progress and identifying challenges". The increases in female participation were seen in all but two regions, Central and South-Eastern Europe (non-EU), and the CIS countries and East Asia, with the largest gain seen in Latin America and the Caribbean… Read more

Consumer Goods Forum survey: CSR bounces back up retail agenda

Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility have climbed back up the list of priorities for the world's largest retailers and consumer brands, according to a major new survey from the Consumer Goods Forum. The trade group's bi-annual Top of Mind report surveyed 345 senior executives at global retail and consumer goods companies in 46 countries and found that corporate responsibility initiatives have regained second place in their list of priorities, having slipped into third last year. Speculation had been mounting that recessionary pressures would force many firms to scale back or ditch CSR initiatives altogether… Read more

Nestlé launches weight management programme in France

Jenny Craig, the personalised programme for weight loss and long-term weight maintenance, combines ready-made meals with individual consultation and lifestyle advice. The programme is launched in France with 17 Jenny Craig centres and an at-home programme. Through this launch, Nestlé wants to offer a solution to address a public health issue. One-on-one consultancy on nutrition, exercise and eating behaviour is offered at Jenny Craig centres or over the phone, while the meals are available at the centres or delivered directly to the consumer… Read more
