From Urgency to Action: Business and the SDGs

CEOs & Collaboration as enablers to shift from Urgency to Action

CSR Europe’s 3rd White Paper, produced in collaboration with Globescan, highlights how society’s progress is lagging behind in reaching SDGs. The time has now come to act and deliver progress. Collaborative platforms and multi-stakeholder partnerships are enablers that can speed up the transition. In this context, CEOs are also expected to take the lead on change.

Four years after the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the time to shift from urgency to action has come. However, obstacles in addressing the 17 global goals,  remain significant. In its 3rd White Paper, CSR Europe together with Globescan, draws on recent publications and studies to provide a detailed overview of the challenges ahead, as well as progress and actions to be undertaken in the framework of CSR Europe’s three priority areas – People, Materials and Markets.

The conclusions reached by European sustainability experts is not comforting.  Even if some improvements have been made over the past 2 years,  society is overall still far away from meeting the SDGs. There are multiples reasons why. Firstly, the pressure to create value for shareholders is very much in the short term. Secondly, businesses perceive the pressure from governments and civil society as less of a priority. Furthermore, not only stakeholder collaboration is scattered and haphazard, but rewards for finding solutions to complex sustainability problems are also poorly aligned.

A solution to these challenges lies in bringing together different stakeholders via multi-stakeholder partnerships & collaborative platforms; as well as CEOs engagement.

MULTI-STAKEHOLDER PARTNERSHIPS OFFER A LOT OF BENEFITS

Multi-stakeholder partnerships & collaborative platforms are initiatives that can deliver progress & impact. They combine various benefits, such as:

  • boost expertise within businesses and reveal business opportunities within the challenges posed by the SDGs
  • bundle knowledge within a sector. For example: DriveSustainability in the automotive
  • match the ability to directly shape society that business brings, together with the commitment & expertise of NGOs & social entrepreneurs

Promoting and facilitating collaborative platforms and multi-sectoral partnerships is fundamental to the work CSR Europe undertakes with European businesses. In the years to come, its mission is to help businesses across Europe foster a true sustainability culture, scale it up through collaborative cross-sector platforms to make systemic transformation possible, and then help achieve system change through advocacy, convening national, regional, and global dialogues

CEOS TO TAKE THE LEAD ON CHANGE

At the same time, Leadership & Engagement of the top management is essential. Business leaders are increasingly asked by the public to be more visible and proactive. Citizens and consumers are looking for CEOs to take a lead on change and to credibly commit to addressing social issues.
