Press Release

  • Due to popular demand CEO sign-up deadline extended to 30 November 2019

  • More than 250 European CEOs have already joined the call - over 40 rushing to sign in last week of September alone

  • On 05 December Call to Action to be presented to new EU presidents

Brussels, 30 September 2019 — Due to exceptionally high demand on the part of Europe’s CEOs, the deadline to join the Call to Action for a New Deal for Europe has been extended by two months. The call to action was due to close on Monday 30 September, but will now remain open until Saturday 30 November. The call to action was launched in May by Solvay CEO Ilham Kadri at the Brussels SDG Summit. It calls on European leaders to implement together an overarching strategy for a Sustainable Europe by 2030 to accelerate sustainable growth, tackle climate change and create inclusive prosperity. Civil society, policymakers, companies and industry sectors are called upon to create collaborative platforms and finance models to implement a sustainable circular and digital economy that fosters lifelong employability and social cohesion.

The call to action, supported and disseminated by CSR Europe National Partner Organisations (NPOs), has already been signed by CEOs from more than 250 European companies, with over 40 signing up in the last week of September alone. Signatories come from a wide variety of companies and industry sectors throughout Europe, from food to furniture, and energy to insurance. The continued demand of European CEOs to join this movement has prompted CSR Europe to extend the deadline for signing up by two months, closing just before its presentation to European leaders. CSR Europe’s Executive Director Stefan Crets explains:

“At the current number of signatories, this is already the widest group of CEOs ever mobilised in Europe. Demand to participate from European CEOs has been overwhelming, and we want to give as many as possible the chance to join up. It sends a clear message to politician and policymakers: European business is mobilised for sustainability and ready for collaboration.”

On Thursday 05 December, CSR Europe aims to present the Call to Action for a New Deal for Europe and its full list of signatories to Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel, and David Maria Sassoli, the newly-elected Presidents of the European Commission, Council of the European Union and European Parliament respectively.  Stefan Crets explains:

“In June we sent an open letter to European leaders to make sustainable development the overarching objective of the EU's priorities. We’re delighted to see that the Green Agenda is among the top EU stated policy priorities for the next five years. But we need to deliver on the promise, together. That’s why we are calling on EU leaders to support the concrete actions we’re recommending that harnesses the energy of business, investors, regulators, civil society and policymakers alike.”

The Call to Action is open to every CEO.

If you are a CEO who takes the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as a compass and are ready to play your part in tackling the climate crisis, endorse our Call to Action before 30 November 2019.
