In its Strategy 2030 CSR Europe emphasised the practical impact of collaborative and cross-industry efforts. Asked by the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA), CSR Europe set up and facilitated the Tyre and Road Wear Particles (TRWP). Collaborative efforts have led to a better understanding of the actions on the environmental issues related to the generation and transportation of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP). Participating companies developed a practical road map to deal with the issue. The methodology used by CSR Europe in this project can be transposed to other sectors and other issues.
Tyre and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) are tiny debris generated during the normal use of tyre on the road. They contribute to the flow of microplastics into the environment and their effects to health and environment are insufficiently known.
Last year the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) adopted a pro-active approach and launched a multi-stakeholder initiative to tackle this issue: the European TRWP Platform, facilitated by CSR Europe. The Platform invited members from the government, academia, civil society and different industrial sectors to create an open and inclusive dialogue among all relevant stakeholders to explore a balanced and holistic approach to address and better understand TRWP. In particular, the Platform aimed to share scientific knowledge, achieving a common understanding of the possible effects of particles generated during normal tyre use and wear, and co-designing mitigation options to reduce TRWP.
The participants of the Platform developed an Action Plan to prevent and mitigate TRWP in a series of measures that could be implemented by different stakeholders (Tyre, Automotive, Road, Waste-Water, Research Institutes, Public Authorities) interested in addressing TRWP in the environment.
Among these measures, six have been identified as having the potential to be launched in the short-term: work on a methodology to analyse TRWP’s composition, develop incentives for positive driving behaviour, address knowledge gaps, develop a platform to share and disseminate knowledge, identify hotspots and create awareness campaigns.
For the moment the different stakeholders are exploring how to continue their collaborative effort by engaging in practical action together.
