El Gran Ahorro is an initiative promoting sustainability in order to encourage behaviour change among your neighbours in Viladecans for energy saving of water, electricity and gas with a competition format during 4 months. A campaign is organised to promote change in social media, street furniture and city magazines.

Short activity description

El Gran Ahorro is an initiative promoting sustainability in order to encourage behavior change among neighbours in Viladecans for energy saving of water, electricity and gas in the domestic space. The initiative with the leadership of Unilever Spain and the City Hall of Viladecans, and the collaboration of cluster C2B, has a competition format, measuring the energy consumption over a period of four months and promotes user-friendly tools and tips, rewarding communities that improve. The winners have perks for using energy improvement of their community. The second edition is being organised.

Achieved impact

65 families participating in the first edition. They have saved between 20 and 30 euros per month and have achieved an average reduction of 13% of electricity, equivalent to 121 kWh (average energy consumption of a home for a month), and 3 % reduction in gas consumption.

Is this project a best practice? Why?

El Gran Ahorro promotes behavior change and the use of domestic energy, a major cause of environmental impact. A better use of energy caring environment and generates cost savings bills, especially those with limited resources.

What are the main lessons learned during implementation?

The smart city projects have to get citizens engaged to succeed. A great communication toolkit is important for making the process of change easier.
