Brief project summary

The L’Oréal factory in Settimo Torinese (Italy) developed an ambitious project with its local partners to neutralise its CO2 emissions. This initiative is an innovative example of a partnership that combines respect for the environment, sustainable development and energy savings.

Short activity description

With a mix of different types of renewable energies, the Settimo Torinese production centre (L’Oréal’s leading plant in product volume terms) is set to become energy self-sufficient. Through agreements with companies the innovative scheme combines a connection to the urban heating grid of the city of Settimo (2011), with energy from solar panels (1/2015), biomass (7/2015) and biogas (11/2015). It will ensure that the site has a continuous supply of “100% clean” energy. With the support of the commune and Pianeta, the Settimo-Torinese site will be able to save more than 90000 tons of CO2/year.

Is this project a best practice? Why?

Thanks to the project's innovation and numerous communication actions (i.e. workshop, conferences, interviews, visits of factories), which attracted media attention, the project is now regarded in Italy as a benchmark in the field of sustainable industrial development.
