Brief project summary

In cooperation with several partners and stakeholders, InnovationCity Ruhr | Model City Bottrop aims to create a sustainable urban redevelopment of Bottrop. The concrete aim is to cut the CO2 emissions by half and thus increase the quality of life.

Short activity description

A creative collaboration in the city of Bottrop has brought together 70 leading companies under the leadership of five stakeholders (Ruhr Initiative Group GmbH, City of Bottrop, BETREM Emscher Fuels GmbH, agiplan GmbH, and RAG Montan Immobilien) from across the region with the goal to transform the city and its 67,000 inhabitants, 22,000 jobs and more than 14,000 buildings, into an example for energy efficiency. The project hopes to halve CO2 emissions by 2020, with a 30% cut in harmful emissions within the transport sector.

To achieve these goals, the following steps were devised:

·         a systematic energy-saving renovation of existing buildings

·         transport-related climate-damaging emissions are to be significantly reduced by, among other initiatives, promoting energy-efficient transport alternatives

·         optimize power generation and intelligent networking of production and demand

·         reassess urban areas, open space planning and water management

Is this project a best practice? Why?

This mission is an excellent example of a local long-term initiative aimed at creating shared value. The participants come from a varied sectorial background, but united under their common stake in the Ruhr region, they’ve pooled their resources and particular expertise to produce a project that can aspire to very ambitious goals that would have been impossible to achieve through unilateral actions.
