Brief project summary

To demonstrate the economic, environmental and societal feasibility of electric urban bus systems by means of different demonstrators, spread around European cities that, combining innovative technologies for electric vehicles and infrastructure, will show the capability of electric bus systems to fulfil the mobility needs of citizens in urban environment.

Short activity description

The project should demonstrate innovative electric buses with different types of electrical power train systems covering plug in hybrid to full electric technologies.

The ZeEUS project will cover innovative electric bus solutions with different types of electrical power-train systems from plug-in hybrid to fully electric technologies, applied to full-size 12m bus. Full-electric battery-based busses will be demonstrated in five locations (Barcelona, Bonn, Muenster, Plzen and Rome), whereas plug-in hybrid or range-extender type of power-trains will be demonstrated in three sites (Bonn, London and Stockholm).

Achieved impact

The consortium is formed by 40 partners: cities, research centers and private companies.

The ZeEUS demo project, its objectives and its activities contribute to validate that public transport, given its intrinsic advantages in terms of GHG avoidance and reduced carbon emissions, must be at the core of any climate change mitigation strategy. It will provide information, evidences and tools to decision makers in such a way public policies on mobility would give priority to the development of smart, integrated urban mobility concepts.

Is this project a best practice? Why?

ZeEUS project demonstrations focus on solutions meeting the following criteria:

- Demonstrations do not use prototype vehicles, but series or pre-series products.
- Vehicles operates in real operative services with passengers, and are already or soon permitted for such a service.
- The number of vehicles operating in each demonstration is high enough to perform a meaningful and statistically valid evaluation of the real impact of the solution on the operations.
- The commitment of all the relevant stakeholders is ensured since the beginning of the project.
- Different geographical, climatic, environmental and operational conditions are represented in the set of selected demonstrations.
