How to Pursue an Active Business Leadership on the SDGs

Friday, September 27, 2019

Enel’s launch of the world’s first SDG bond, worth 1.4 billion Euro, proves that it is possible to balance short-term shareholder value and long-term pressure for increased sustainability. Companies that are struggling to integrate the SDGs into their business model can join the upcoming SDG Masterclass on the 15th October 2019. Discover our service offer for Companies

Companies are becoming more and more mature when it comes to their sustainability management. Many have started addressing the challenges posed by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as they understand that sustainability is a business imperative. One example of such company is CSR Europe’s longtime member Enel. The Italian multinational energy and utilities company launched the world’s first SDG bond and managed to attract 1.4 billion Euro of investments. The bonds will contribute to finance Enel’s business actions geared towards the achievement of 4 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): “Affordable and clean energy” (SDG 7), “Industry, infrastructure & innovation” (SDG 9), “Sustainable cities and communities” (SDG 11), and “Climate Action” (SDG 13).

However, companies do not always manage to balance short-term shareholder value and the pressure from government and civil society to embrace sustainability. As highlighted in CSR Europe’s 2019 White Paper “From Urgency to Action”, rewards for finding solutions to complex sustainability problems are poorly aligned and stakeholder collaboration to help meet the goals is scattered and haphazard. As a result, progresses on the SDGs risk of falling behind.

CSR Europe developed the SDGs Masterclass to support companies in taking strategic actions on the SDGs. In a full-day workshop, CSR Europe gives companies an understanding of how the SDGs are relevant to their business and how they can take practical action. The SDG Masterclass, launched in 2018, has benefited over 200 companies across Europe. If your company is struggling to integrate the SDGs and improve its sustainability, join the upcoming SDG Masterclass on the 15th October 2019. If your company is looking for a more tailored support, CSR Europe offers the SDG Masterclass as an individual service all year round. We  will help your team to analyse your strategy, identify material areas to take action and support the development of a clear and practical action plan.
