Disability Hub Europe for Sustainable Growth and Social Innovation (DHub) Launching Event took place the 21st of March at the European Parliament. The aim of DHub is to create a reference space to work on the binomial Disability and Sustainability.
The project, led by Fundación ONCE, is carried out within the framework of the “Spanish Operational Programme on Social Inclusion and Social Economy 2014-2020” and will be developed until 2020. It focuses on disseminating best practices and mobilizing actors on how disability is or can be integrated in business and other organizations’ strategies looking for an inclusive sustainable future.
DHub is aligned with the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, which recognize people with disabilities as part of the existing vulnerable groups and different Goals expressly refer to them, building on the principle “leaving no one behind”. Particularly the project is aligned with goals 8 “Decent work and economic growth”, 10 “Reduced inequalities” and 17 “Partnerships for the goals”.
In this sense, DHub is a multi-stakeholder engagement initiative developed with the joint action of its partners. Some relevant entities are already on board: L’Oréal and Dow Chemical as multinationals, CSR Europe, the European Disability Forum, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the ILO Global Business and Disability Network (ILO GBDN) and the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).
As noted by Fundación ONCE, DHub will foster different initiatives:
- The publication “Disability in Sustainability Reporting” presented at the event in Brussels
- A reference report about the Future of Work and People with Disabilities which will be published in December with the Global Business and Disability Network (GBDN) of the International Labour Organization (ILO)
- The European Awards for Social Entrepreneurship and Disability, two successful editions were celebrated in the past under the former network CSR + Disability.
The event, hosted by MEP Helga Stevens, co-president of the Disability Intergroup and co-organized by Fundación ONCE and CSR Europe, was attended by representatives from companies, public administrations, civil society entities, platforms and others organizations committed in one way or another to sustainability and disability.
At the conference, the partners of DHub shared their approach and strategies towards disability and sustainability while Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Fundación ONCE and Accountancy Europe discussed about non-financial reporting and more specifically about disability in sustainability reporting.
The European Commission, through the DG of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion and the Head of the Disability unit; the Ministry of Labour, Migration and Social Affairs of Spain and MEPs Inmaculada Rodriguez-Piñero, Verónica Lope, Ramón Jáuregui, Olga Sehnalova and Adam Kosa; were present at the event.
