Yesterday, the first leaders meeting of the European Pact for Youth was held at the European Commission in Brussels. The meeting was hosted by Marianne Thyssen, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility and Viscount Etienne Davignon, Minister of State and President of CSR Europe. It was a chance to share and reflect on the progress made towards the target of 10,000 new business-education partnerships, and 100,000 new good quality apprenticeships, traineeships or entry-level jobs.
The leaders of the European Pact for Youth were, and still are clear in their message that they believe in a Europe of solutions, a Europe that offers its young people the direction, motivation, skills and opportunities to succeed and excel in work and in society.
The group of leaders, from an array of backgrounds, sectors and regions, discussed options to enhance the attractiveness and quality in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and apprenticeship schemes, as well as to improve the mobility of young apprentices and their teachers and trainers.
Their ambition is to make VET and apprenticeships an attractive, qualitative and equal choice for young people across Europe, and to increase youth employability and social inclusion, while investing in the continuing professional development of teachers and trainers.
Under the framework of the Pact for Youth, three concrete policy proposals, will be presented at the first European Enterprise-Education Summit that will take place on 23rd November 2017.

“The commitment from CEOs and association leaders in this meeting is a demonstration of the common vision. That vision is that professional training and work-based learning opportunities are of key importance to provide more young people with the right set of hard and soft skills in order to build up their careers and their lives. Professional training is not a second choice, nor is it a plan B. It should be a Plan A and an equal choice, not only for these young people. It can also help to boost European growth. That is why the first policy proposal is a call to leverage the existing knowledge and experience around VET education and apprenticeships in Europe through promoting excellence and providing mobility opportunities. We need a clear, well-branded and attractive offer to the young people and citizens of Europe.”
