Sustainability and innovation, pivotal drivers of future prospects amid challenges and opportunities, intertwine within the contemporary entrepreneurial sphere, forming an integral dyad.

Corporations are now urged to embed sustainability seamlessly into their corporate fabric to mitigate environmental impacts and foster community value. Moreover, sustainability serves as a key piece for competitive prowess, catalyzing organizational metamorphosis and infusing novel methodologies into product development and operational paradigms.

Keeping this in mind, Impronta Etica, in collaboration with Sustainability Makers, has released new research "Sustainability and Innovation: From Vision to Action". The Report aims to explore the internal workings of organizations that foster sustainable innovation.

Derived from a private meeting with the top leaders of Impronta Etica's companies in April 2023, the research synthesizes insights and best practices at the confluence of sustainability and innovation. A strategic roadmap, laden with pragmatic value propositions, materializes, illuminating a corporate panorama beset with dialectical tensions.

Three main priorities emerge:

  • Cultivating a shared organizational vision among stakeholders.

  • Utilizing ideas from inside and outside the company.

  • Proficiently reconfiguring competencies and assets using effective methods.

Empirical findings underscore the prominence of environmental and social sustainability targets, embraced by a significant majority (83.7%) of enterprises. However, the integration of these targets into compensation frameworks lags behind, with a mere 53.3% adherence rate. Notably, proactive measures, such as establishing cross-functional task forces (83.7%) and fostering external partnerships (70.7%), herald synergistic coalitions of diverse competencies. Yet, a meager 53.3% allocation towards sustainable innovation projects underscores a need for heightened investment commitments.

Key accelerators propelling the sustainable innovation continuum are identified. Paramount is the recognition and empowerment of the sustainability manager's pivotal role, serving as a catalyst (34.8%) and enabler (33.7%) within the corporate social responsibility landscape. This eclectic portrayal underscores the exigent demand for adaptability and versatility in navigating the multifaceted organizational milieu.

In summary, sustainable innovation is a topic in progress, in evolution, which every day acquires more and more strategic importance for organizations, and which therefore requires new understanding skills, new models of thought and the structuring of new strategic paradigms that pivot on it.
