Business challenge
To improve medical services in Greece remote areas via the use of mobile telecommunications technology. Non - specialized doctors that are the main and only health care providers in rural areas of Greece can have access to high quality specialized medical advice support from the specialists doctors (cardiologist and pneumonologist) situated in Athens Medical Center.
Description of solution
The programme was first implemented in 2006 to 5 municipalities in Central Macedonia, Greece. In 2008 it was expanded to 17 municipalities across Greece reaching 30 in 2011.
The main purpose of the programme is to provide primary mhealth care services to Greek residents living in remote areas.
Expected outcomes of the programme are the following:
Patients/General public:
- Preventive medicine
- Ubiquitous communication with specialist doctors
- Enhance the sense of security due to provision of access to specialist doctors
- Overcame geographical limitations
Participants’ doctors:
- Access to knowledge via the scientific cooperation with specialist doctors
- Provision of medical services to rural areas
- More efficient patient management
Solution impact
The program is being organised and supported by Vodafone Greece. The other involved parties for the implementation of the program are:
- the Local Government Authority Inter-Municipal Health & Social Solidarity Network, whose members include the municipalities involved in the program
- the specialist doctors (cardiologists and pneumologists) of the Athens Medical Center (central hospital)
- the technical support and training from company Vidavo
The stakeholders involved are:
- The municipalities that participate in the program
- The peripheral doctors that implement the program
- The residents of the municipalities that participate in the program
