Environmental Management System Communication

Organisation Name

Orange Slovensko (Slovakia)

Problem

Orange has defined its responsibilities towards the environment within its CSR project and committed to implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS). Orange's employees are one of its most important stakeholders. It considers their involvement key to the successful realisation of the implementation as their everyday work fulfils the company's environmental protection goals.

Solution

The goal was to communicate its policy on EMS effectively to all its employees. Making use of multiple communication channels Orange Slovakia set out to train its staff that environmental protection was both an important part of its work as well as an important aspect of managing the company. Almost 1000 employees have been trained in this way.

Communication channels reaching all employees were:

  • the "in house" magazine "O nás", for which an article about the EMS was written.
  • corporate intranet sites, where the most important EMS information and documents were made available.
  • e-mails: every employee received information by e-mail about internal, pre-certification and certification audits and about the launch of EMS programmes.
  • visual communication: information boards and signs were also used for the effective communication of EMS programmes.

Communication channels reaching specific staff groups: the content of the EMS training programme was adjusted for some employees:

  • Employees of CS - This training programme included information about Electro Magnetic emissions from telecommunication devices.
  • Employees of the shop in OSK -This training programme included principles and current legal obligations for the proper disposal of hazardous waste.
  • For the employees of TD -This training programme included a major section on the prevention of accidents in areas where there are increased levels of environmental protection and on the proper disposal of hazardous waste, such as BTS batteries.

Constraints

  • Environmental training is time consuming.

Benefits

  • Personal involvement of Orange employees in the protection of the environment.
  • Enhanced perception of Orange as an environmentally responsible company.
  • Positive support for EMS shown by employees, for example suggestions for other environmental improvements.
  • Greater employee loyalty .
