Managing over 400 CSR Key Performance Indicators
Custom Developed Software to Monitor CSR Integration with Corporate Strategy
Organisation Name
Enel SpA
Problem
The initial problem was the need to monitor over 400 KPIs measuring the magnitudes that Enel considers fundamental for its auditing, reporting and sustainability. The large number of KPIs, the collection of the results from numerous countries (North and Latin America, Bulgaria, Romania, Spain and Slovakia) and the need to standardize these numbers in a single model quickly available for the top management, the Board of Directors and the CSR team, were difficult obstacles to overcome. Furthermore, it was necessary to compare the new numbers with the same magnitudes of the previous year and to create a tool for the control of quarterly targets in view of the BSC (Balanced Score Card).
Solution
As the previous tool used to collect the data was Excel® (with all its limits including the inability to manage a Balanced Score Card, difficulty in adapting to new requirements and the uncertain reliability of the data), the solution was to create/buy web-based software that allows the data (from international activities and every corporate unit individually) to be entered on each single indicator from the point where they were recorded. On the other hand, the new software, tailored to Enel’s needs, also allows for the data to be accessed on the web.
The information that Enel surveys is not only quantitative, but also qualitative. A gap analysis is required for each KPI. For the KPI family, or group, Enel could provide a sort of "strategic card", including the following fundamental points:
- 12-month targets.
- Ongoing projects.
- Projects to be started.
- Most important critical situations.
Constraints
- The lack of ready-to-use, already customised tools on the market and of similar, useful experiences in Italy.
- The need to develop a customised project.
- Challenging to deliver a final product that is flexible, available on the web and user-friendly.
Benefits
- A quarterly survey.
- An effective BSC.
- Online information for the top management.
- A company dashboard, where sustainability is integrated with the business plan.
