Wellbeing in the Workplace for Ageing Employees

CSR Europe's Toolbox - Integrated Workplace

Building on the work of the Wellbeing in the Workplace Laboratory, this project focused on wellbeing for ageing employees. The group brought together companies from various sectors to identify current challenges and business practices related to the ageing workforce and the development of wellbeing policies addressing the specific needs of older employees.

Did you know?

  • By 2025, one in five Europeans will be more than 65 years old, up from 16% in 2002.
  • Currently, only around 50% of people in the EU are still in employment by the age of 60.
  • In an EU-wide survey, seven in 10 EU citizens disagreed that companies that mostly employ young people perform better than those that employ people from different age groups.

Wellbeing at Work for Ageing Employees

Building on the work of the Wellbeing in the Workplace Laboratory, this project focused on Wellbeing for Ageing Employees. Initiated by CSR Europe and led by Johnson & Johnson, the group brought together companies from various sectors to identify current challenges and business practices related to the ageing workforce and the development of wellbeing policies addressing the specific needs of older employees.

In 2009-2010, the working group, which included companies such as Accor Services, BASF, Dow, Randstad, Solvay and Volkswagen as well as a wide range of stakeholders, addressed questions such as:

  • How can companies proactively address demographic change in Europe, taking into account the ageing workforce?
  • What are the specific wellbeing issues related to this employee group?
  • What are the strategies companies should put in place internally with regards to the ageing workforce?

As a result, the group developed a set of practical tools that can be used by other companies and organisations to further develop their own age management strategies. It also appeals to the European Union and national governments to work on a more harmonized legislative framework to facilitate the recruitment and employability of older citizens in the European Union.

This working group now continues under the framework of Enterprise 2020 and the European Year of Active Ageing 2012.
