Business in the Community
Profile
Founded in 1982, Business in the Community (BITC) is a business-led charity which stands for Responsible Business. It works with companies willing to build a sustainable future for people and planet. With a growing membership of 850 companies all over the world, from large multinational household names to small local businesses and public sector organizations, BITC provides a framework to advise, support and challenge businesses to have a positive impact in the society through a responsible performance.
Working through 11 Regional offices in the UK, including Northern Ireland and Wales, as well as participating in over 110 international partnerships via our CSR360 Global Partner Network, BITC has four areas of expertise to deal with different and specific needs: community, environment, workplace and marketplace.
Vision and values
Integrating responsible business practice throughout an organisation is a step forward to assure a sustainable future and the development of communities. That is why we inspire and support our members in achieving that goal through a series of measures:
- Demonstrating clear leadership, governance and values
- Developing products and services with improved social and environmental impacts that influence customer’s behaviour
- Developing employees and the future workforce
- Investing in their local communities focused on those in greatest need
- Managing social, environment and economic impacts in the supply chain
- Managing resources sustainably and preparing for a low carbon economy
- Working with others to create change that benefits business and society
In the Community
Our members work collaboratively to address key social issues and the needs of their local communities in relation to education, employability and economic renewal.
In the Environment
We support and engage our members to reduce their carbon emissions through The Prince's May Day Network on Climate change.
In the Marketplace
We support and engage our members in how a company innovates, sources and markets their products and services to ensure they generate revenue with integrity.
In the Workplace
We support and engage our members to speed up the introduction of responsible and inclusive employment practices and meeting the UK's talent challenge.
Regionally
Business in the Community has eleven regional teams across the UK providing a range of brokerage services with local knowledge, experience and networks
Internationally
The International Campaign at Business in the Community stands business for good on international corporate responsibility issues.
Using BITC's expertise and working through a range of partners, government, NGOs and others, the International Campaign calls business to action to address the key social, environmental and economic challenges facing global society.
It aims to inspire, support and challenge business to increase their positive impact in the markets where they operate and through their employees, suppliers, and customers and therefore being a catalyst for change.
