Enhancing access to education and employment for people with disabilities
In most European countries, people with disabilities experience major difficulties to reach the highest possible educational level because of issues related to the accessibility of buildings or access to course material for visual or hearing impaired people. Through a collaboration of IBM University Relations, HR Diversity and Accessibility, IBM selects universities in Europe that are known to be very active in the area of access to education for students with disabilities and proposes a collaboration agreement with the university in order to facilitate the professional integration of students with disabilities. Making zero the hero when it comes to workplace health and safety

In 2003, ArcelorMittal Dofaso in Hamilton, Canada began its 'Journey to Zero', in other words, making the achievement of a no injuries or illnesses our ultimate goal. The aim was to engage people at every level of the organisation, and after the survey responses had been analysed we convened a number of focus groups to share the results, choosing them from a cross-section of management, employees and functions, from the CEO down. In the five years since 2003, there has been a steady reduction in all key performance indicators. In particular, the Lost Time Injury frequency went from 10.55 (per 1,000,000 manhours) to 0.99, which is a 91% improvement. Read more
GEPSA - Helping former inmates back to work
For people coming out of prison, access to a job is a strong element of social reintegration back into society and one of the ways to prevent a relapse into criminal behaviour. GEPSA, a GDF SUEZ subsidiary, is one of the French Penal Administration's contractors providing technical and social services. To help inmates to develop a professional project and establish links with outside companies, GEPSA has developed a structured TPP (Tuteur de Projet Professionnel) method. Read more

HP provides IT and business skills training for unemployed young people
HP's Graduate Entrepreneurship Training through IT (GET-IT) provides under - or unemployed young people, aged 16-25, with a unique combination of entrepreneurship and IT training. HP and its non-profit partners offer GET-IT courses at 70 centres in 25 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The web portal ‘GET-IT City' allows young people who don't live close to a centre to tap into the content of the GET-IT courses through games and video clips. Read more
UNESCO and HP address brain drain in Africa
UNESCO and HP are working together with universities in five African countries to address the problem of academics moving abroad to further their research and employment prospects (known as ‘brain drain'). The pilot project connects scientists to international colleagues, research networks and potential funding organisations through grid computing technology. Read more
Giving steel new appeal for students in Dunkerque
For the last 12 years ArcelorMittal plants in Dunkerque, France have been running an educational programme with local schools. HP project develops blueprint for sustainability through supply chains
HP and the Danish Commerce and Companies Agency have published a report setting out guidelines for multinational companies on how to promote environmental and social responsibility among their small and medium business suppliers. The report, entitled ‘Small Suppliers in Global Supply Chains', is based on a exhaustive study of HP's small and medium company suppliers based in the Czech Republic and is part of an EU-sponsored ‘Central European Supplier Responsibility' project. Sustainable architecture and AGC glass

Inaugurated in spring 2008, the futuristic Sino-Italian Ecological Energy Efficient Building (SIEEB) in Beijing shows that it is possible to combine contemporary architecture and environmental sustainability in the Chinese capital. The SIEEB is the headquarters of a Chinese-Italian training and research centre for environmental protection and energy conservation. AGC Flat Glass Europe has made an active contribution to developing the façade systems for the SIEEB by providing technical support for the project and supplying glass for use in its construction. Flat Carbon Europe is taking part in the Sustainable Energy Europe campaign, with a project called ‘Off gases management optimisation ArcelorMittal's Flat Carbon Europe.' The project consists in exchanging best practices amongst the plants of FCE, in order to minimise flare losses. Read more
ArcelorMittal and the search for Ultra-Low Carbon Steelmaking technigues
ArcelorMittal is the industrial coordinator of the ULCOS consortium, which stands for Ultra-Low CO2 Steelmaking, and which brings together 48 European companies, universities and laboratories all working towards achieving significant CO2 reductions in steel production. Read more
HP and WWF support Ashridge Sustainable Innovation Award
HP and WWF are supporting an essay award by Ashridge Business School and the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS). The aim of the award is to find the best ideas from students on how organisations can use innovation to create value from the shift to a low carbon economy. The award theme builds on the joint work of HP and WWF, focusing on how IT can assist the shift to a low carbon economy. Read more
