UK commission calls for consistency in public health strategy
Public health strategies are failing to have their desired impact because inconsistent and confusing consumer information is blocking the facilitation of behaviour change, according to a report by a high-profile Public Health Commission set up by the UK's Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley. Alcatel-Lucent launches world’s first “green DSL”
Alcatel-Lucent has launched a new high-capacity and eco-efficient digital subscriber line (DSL) platform which consumes up to 25% less power compared to conventional DSL solutions. "Today, standards exist that allow modems to go in a low-power mode when user traffic is low. However, re-activating these modems causes power fluctuations – resulting in crosstalk and destabilizing the network,” said Jürgen Lison, Vice-President of Alcatel-Lucent's ISAM product unit. The new green DSL provides operators with a solution that overcomes these issues – enabling a significant reduction of the modems’ power consumption across a service provider’s subscriber base without causing any line stability issues, Lison said… Read more

Photovoltaics installation starts operating in Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant
Volkswagen inaugurated North Germany's biggest photovoltaics installation on the roof of its plant in Wolfsburg, lowering both energy costs and advocating environmentally friendly production. The installation uses novel Teflon-coated photovoltaics-laminates on an area of 125.000 m2. Due to license agreements with the companies Freiburger S.A.G. Solarstrom AG and WG-Projektmanagement, Volkswagen receives a share of the feed-in remuneration.Plant manager Siegfried Fiebig is proud of the new installation, saving over 1600 tons of CO2 per annum and further contributing to Volkswagen's commitment to renewable energy… Read more

Toyota technical education programme expands in the Netherlands
The Toyota Technical Education Program (T-TEP) received a boost in the Netherlands with the addition of a new training college, ROC Mondriaan, in The Hague. The Automotive Department at ROC Zadkine in Rotterdam has also been presented with a new Toyota AYGO vehicle to be used in T-TEP training activities. T-TEP is supported throughout the Netherlands by local Toyota distributor, Louwman & Parqui BV. T-TEP was started by Toyota in 1990 with the goal of closing the gap between industry and education by providing support for technical education and to improve the image of skilled technical professions through direct and indirect communication… Read more

Toyota-WWF Pandamobile completes 50 carbon-neutral exhibition days
The WWF's Pandamobile, a specially fitted Toyota Dyna truck, has completed more than 50 exhibition days and visited 30 towns in seven countries since it was commissioned in July 2008. The Pandamobile is utilised in WWF's Climate Change Roadshow which aims to raise awareness of climate change and to educate people that they have a vital and urgent role to play in minimising carbon dioxide emissions. The vehicle is fitted with four 85 watt solar panels and a 300 watt wind turbine. Together the panels and turbine generate enough energy to power the Pandamobile’s DVD player, large screen television, computers, sound system and other equipment for two days… Read more

Consumer perception on CSR doesn't match rankings, study says
Consumer perception of corporate responsibility is uncorrelated with measured rankings like the CRO 100, according to a US survey conducted by PSB in conjunction with Burson-Marsteller and Landor. People are willing to pay more for products from socially responsible companies - 75% said are willing to pay more - but very few companies have any real profile as socially responsible, the study found. The top-scoring brands on the CSR perception index were Johnson & Johnson, Google, Subway, Microsoft and General Mills… Read more

BITC presents 2009 Awards for Excellence
On 6 July, Business in the Community (BITC) presented its 2009 Awards for Excellence to 14 businesses and two individuals, recognising their innovation, creativity and a sustained commitment to corporate responsibility. An unprecedented 358 entries were submitted this year, with 106 Big Ticks being awarded over the past 6 weeks at regional events in the UK across 14 categories. Sanofi-aventis organises sustainability week
For the third year in a row, the global healthcare company sanofi-aventis organized a Group-wide sustainability week during the month of June. This event aims to raise employees' awareness on the Group's sustainability approach. It is implemented worldwide among the affiliates in nearly 100 countries. During the week, corporate sustainability brochures and posters were distributed in the offices. Dow welcomes Spanish Congressional Industry Commission at Tarragona site to foster industrial competitiveness
The Congressional Industry, Tourism and Trade Commission delegation of Spain recently visited Dow Chemical facilities at Tarragona, including the R&D Centre where Dow is creating a new global Water Technology Development Center. The center is designed to accelerate the commercialization of Dow's water treatment technologies, which help to enable the production of clean drinking water from various water sources, including seawater.
