Member companies contribute to relief efforts in Haiti

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the Republic of Haiti on Tuesday 12 January is the most powerful to hit the island nation in a century. The Haitian ambassador to the United States called it a catastrophe for the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation, and the country's authorities recorded as many as 70,000 deaths in the first week. Following the earthquake, governments and individuals around the globe are donating money to aid the people of Haiti. Alcatel-Lucent Foundation renews commitment to Young Science Achievers Program

The Young Science Achievers Program, which is dedicated to encouraging New Jersey and New York high school students from groups underrepresented in science, engineering, technology and math to pursue careers in those areas, announced on 19 January that the Alcatel-Lucent Foundation has renewed its support for the organization with a three-year commitment of $240,000. Dow Donates to earthquake relief in Haiti

As a part of an initial response to the recent 7.0-magnitude earthquake in the Republic of Haiti, The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) is donating $500,000 to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund facilitated by the American Red Cross to assist in emergency relief and rescue operations. Dow will also match employee contributions to earthquake relief in Haiti - up to $250,000 in combined donations. The Dow matching contribution will go to the United Nations World Food Programme and CARE to support their relief efforts in the country… Read more

It’s kickoff time for the 2010 Orange Book Award, the internet users’ literature prize

France Telecom OrangeOrange is launching the second Orange Book Award, presided over by Erik Orsenna. The Orange Book Award, created in 2009, is the first internet users' litterature prize to involve a community. It honours works of fiction (novels and short stories) written in French and published in France between 1 January and 30 April of the current year; the winner is the book which receives the most internet users' votes. For the first time in a large scale competition, web users are invited to participate throughout the process from the early stages, when they discuss their favorite books, through the selection of candidates and then finalists, to the final vote in which they alone take part… Read more

Three-hundred young scientists to be honored as semifinalists in the Intel® Science Talent Search 2010

IntelThree-hundred seniors from 175 high schools across the country will be named semifinalists in the Intel® Science Talent Search 2010, a program of Society for Science & the Public. The Intel Science Talent Search encourages students to tackle challenging scientific questions and develop the skills to solve the problems of tomorrow. The Aviva Foundation is helping Polish sportsmen and women prepare for the London 2012 Paralympic Games

The Aviva Foundation has started a grant programme for disabled sportsmen and women and their trainers, which will make their preparations for the London 2012 Paralympic Games easier. The Foundation has entered into long-term collaboration with the Polish Paralympic Committee. The grant programme, which will last until 2012, will help 50 sportsmen and women and 18 trainers. This is almost half of the national team. ENGAGE campaign showcased at Europe for Citizen’s Conference 2009

Charles Duff, Chief Operating Officer Europe & Middle East, Coffey International, represented ENGAGE at the Europe for Citizen’s Conference 2009 in Brussels in December. The Conference which brought together 20 European voluntary networks to initiate preparations for the 2011 European Year of Volunteering with an emphasis on how to ‘Capitalise on the European Year of Volunteering to mobilise Citizens to be active – roles and contributions of the key actors’. Intel commits $200 million for math and science education; part of President Obama’s ‘Educate to Innovate’ campaign
