Pledge of $150m to fight neglected diseases
Six pharmaceutical companies and several governments have pledged more than $150m in medicines and funding over five years to tackle some of the most neglected diseases, the Financial Times reports. The debilitating illnesses – including leprosy, lymphatic filariasis and sleeping sickness – affect 1 billion of the world’s poorest people, place a burden on health services, stunt children’s education and hinder economic development. A report issued by the World Health Organisation argues that several of the 17 diseases identified could be eliminated by 2020 by increased distribution of simple medicines… Read more

Bank of America invests $130 million in nonprofits across U.S.
As part of an ongoing effort to stimulate economic vitality in communities across the United States, Bank of America has announced more than $20 million in funding and training to nonprofits nationwide through its Neighborhood Excellence Initiative, bringing the bank's total commitment to $130 million since 2004. Volkswagen Group opens training academy in India
Volkswagen is strengthening its commitment in India: The Group has opened its training academy in Pune. The academy provides training for apprentices, employees and dealers from all Group brands and production plants in India. The inauguration was attended by Lower Saxony’s Minister President David McAllister, who visited the new Volkswagen plant in Pune accompanied by a 50-member delegation. Office Depot releases catalog dedicated to products from Historically Underutilized Businesses
Office Depot, global provider of office products and services, has released its second annual Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) catalog, which highlights select HUB suppliers and an assortment of more than 1,300 items. HUBs are historically under-marketed, underutilized and often misunderstood enterprises. KKR’s Green Program expands in Europe and to Australia

Business leaders visit London's most deprived areas - The Prince's Seeing is Believing programme
On October 12th, KPMG LLP led a group of leaders from UK businesses on a visit to schools in some of London's most deprived areas where they experienced and learnt from inspiring examples of effective, sustainable business partnerships with schools. Novartis affirms commitment to sustain efforts toward final elimination of leprosy in partnership with World Health Organization
At a ceremony at the WHO's headquarters in Geneva, Joseph Jimenez, CEO of Novartis, and Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the WHO, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to continue their collaboration toward a world free of leprosy. Under the terms of the MoU, Novartis continues to provide free multidrug therapy (MDT) medicines to all countries worldwide. The donation to the WHO, valued at about USD 26 million, will treat an estimated 1.1 million leprosy patients over the next five years, through 2015… Read more
