Waitrose chief to chair Business in the Community, UK
Business in the Community (BITC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Price, managing director of Waitrose, as its new chairman. Mr Price will officially take over from BITC's current chairman, Sir Stuart Rose, chairman of Marks and Spencer, on 1 January 2011 and will remain in post for three years. Read more (Source: BITC)

Japanese CSR Colleagues visit CSR Europe
On November 5th a delegation from Kyushu, Japan came to visit the CSR Europe offices. The delegation consisted of around 40 business leaders from the island, from a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, energy and technology. Their visit was intended to explain the work of CSR Europe, and the relations and attitudes of NGOs and the European Commission with regards to CSR in Europe. The meeting was also a chance for CSR Europe to present the Enterprise 2020 initiative to the delegation, allowing us to explain the future activities of CSR Europe and CSR in the European arena… Read more

Ten years of the Transparent Factory’s “CarGoTram”
Ten years ago, with the "CarGoTram", a new chapter was added to tram history: on 16 November 2000, the unique freight train travelled through Dresden for the first time. Since then, the blue Volkswagen train has been transporting about 420 metric tonnes of automotive parts per day. Topics covered include national CSR policies and legislation, key drivers of CSR, main organisational actors, and recent developments in various thematic areas including environment, supply chain, human rights, equal opportunities, community engagement, and sustainable products and services. Unilever announces plans to decouple future growth from environmental impact
Ambitious plans were announced at the launch of Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan. These plans involve developing new ways of doing business which will ensure that company growth does not come at the expense of the world’s diminishing natural resources. Plans were also announced to help over 1 billion people take action to improve their health and wellbeing, mostly in developing countries, over the next 10 years. Cargill sponsors WFP project on malnutrition in India
Cargill has launched a new partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) to improve food security and nutrition in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, where sixty percent of the children are underweight, half have stunted growth and at 69.5 percent the infant mortality rate is among the highest in the country. Cargill has also been working for the past four years with CARE, a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty, to improve livelihoods in India. The WFP project is one more step in trying to bring the two sides of the prosperity coin in India closer together… Read more

BITC to Launch new 'ways2work' online resource to promote sustainable travel and flexible working
A new online tool to promote sustainable travel and encourage flexible working will be launched in London on 12 November at the annual National Business Travel Network (NBTN) Members' Conference. The ways2work tool is the latest joint initiative from NBTN and Business in the Community (BITC) and represents a key output of this collaboration. Dow Becomes First Global Partner of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011)

Alcatel-Lucent scores a perfect 100 on Equality Index
The Human Rights Campaign has awarded Alcatel-Lucent a perfect score of 100 in its Corporate Equality Index for 2011. Alcatel-Lucent are one of 337 major US businesses committed to creating a work place environment that is safe, supportive and offers equal opportunity to its employees who are Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay or Transgendered.
