East London Pupils Go Head-to-Head for Speaking Prize
LONDON – 21 June 2012 - Wahida Tasnim, a 14 year old student from Mulberry School for Girls was last night named winner of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2012 Student Presentation Skills Final.Tasnim impressed the audience after delivering a passionate speech on climate change.She beat stiff competition from the eight other finalists, following a series of competitive heats and semi-finals at schools across Tower Hamlets. Each finalist gave a speech on an issue facing the future of the financial world and presented to Tim Loughton MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, who opened the event… Read more

EU hosts networking event on "Better advice to SMEs"
The European Commission hosted a Networking Event for people who advise SMEs on CSR on the 12th and 13th of June 2012 in Berlin. This international event, held in English, brought together about 100 experts and practitioners in the field from the 27 European Union Member States and Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey to actively engage in peer-to-peer learning and share best practices across Europe. EU vehicle emissions standards set to create €9bn worth of new jobs
EU impact assessment touts economic and environmental benefits of imposing 2020 carbon targets on cars and vansForcing new vehicles to meet proposed tighter emissions standards could create €9bn of new jobs and save €36bn in fuel costs by 2030, according to draft EU estimates.The European Union is considering setting a goal of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometre for new cars from 2020, following on from the current goal of 130g/km by 2015, while the same target for vans may be set at 147g/km from the end of the decade, down from 175g/km by 2017… Read more

Commission launches 'Your First EURES job' pilot project to help young people find jobs
A pilot project to help young people find a job in another EU country has been launched by the European Commission.In its initial phase 'Your first EURES job' will aim to improve cross-border mobility for 5,000 people. It will also serve as a testing ground for transforming EURES – the network of Member States' employment services – towards a pan-European employment service.Four selected employment services from Germany, Spain, Denmark and Italy will help young people look for work in Member States other than their own… Read more

EU helps car industry reach new heights

EU lowers targets for first binding energy efficiency targets
The EU has agreed its first ever legally binding energy efficiency targets, but was forced to scale back its ambition to secure a compromise acceptable to all member states.The new Energy Efficiency Directive, approved by the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) yesterday, is designed to reduce energy consumption and dependence on imported fossil fuels that cost the EU €573bn last year.It outlines measures to achieve a 17 per cent cut in energy consumption by 2020 - a target that falls short of the 20 per cent goal initially proposed and has lead to accusations from campaigners that the directive lacks sufficient ambition… Read more
