CSR in a downturn - Recession-proof ethics can weather the storm
Consumers who already pay a premium for ethical goods such as Fairtrade and organic produce are unlikely to be put off by an economic slowdown, Ethical Corporation reports. Experts say an increase in prices would not automatically result in a switch to cheaper products, as purchasers of 'ethical' products tend to be less price-responsive than purchasers of their conventional counterparts. Some say that recession may even be the catalyst that drives ethical business into the mainstream, as consumers and companies turn to energy-efficient practices and products as a means of cost savings… Read more

European Parliament calls for a more social angle to employment strategy
EU heads of state and government are set to discuss the bloc's employment guidelines for the period 2008-2010 at next week's Spring Summit amid pressure from Parliament to give a more social angle to the strategy. EU employment ministers have agreed that the existing employment guidelines should remain largely unchanged until 2010. However, signals from the European Parliament indicate that the Parliament's report on the issue, due in May, will criticise the approach taken by the Commission in favour of a strengthened social dimension of the guidelines… Read more

Equal opportunities in Europe’s workplaces still not reality
Efforts to ensure equal opportunities for women and men in Europe’s labour markets will have limited results unless the support for formal care is increased, as women will no longer necessarily be available to assume the unpaid role of informal carer, recent research from Eurofound shows. While men may work long working weeks in their paid jobs, women work even longer weekly hours as a result of shouldering the greater part of domestic responsibilities in addition to paid employment. Across Europe, four out of five women (80%) do housework every day, as against 40% of men… Read more

CSR in Italy: Financial sector leads the way
"Italian banks claim a lot of the credit for encouraging corporate responsibility in modern Italy", Toby Webb writes in an Ethical Corporation article on CSR in Italy. "The oldest bank in the world, Monte Paschi di Siena, was set up in the 15th century on social principles. In more modern times, until recently over half of the social reports issued by Italian companies came from the financial sector. Financial organizations such as Unicredit and Intesa San Paolo lead the way in Italy, but will come against new CSR challenges as they expand abroad in the future… Read more

OECD report says environmental action urgent, but achievable and affordable
