GRI Readers’ Choice Awards announces eligible winners

The GRI has announced a short-list of eligible winners for the GRI Readers' Choice Awards. Over 1700 people from 70 countries cast more than 6000 scores for the initial 800 reports submitted for the online vote. After three months of scoring (October-December 2007), a short-list of 78 was created which consisted of reports that had received the highest amount of scores. Scoring was re-opened for one more month (January 2008) for shortlisted reports only. From these 78 shortlisted reports only 45 reports have been declared eligible to receive one of eight awards to be given out in different categories… Read more

Bangkok talks touch on emission reduction targets

Around 1,000 representatives from around the world are in Bangkok this week for a UN meeting to discuss a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, Environmental Finance reports. Ideas put forward by the various delegates so far include the auctioning of Assigned Amount Units (emissions credits granted by the UN to countries under the Kyoto Protocol), radical changes to the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), and sectoral-based targets. UN poverty goals face new threats

The UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), aimed primarily at reducing poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy, are being undermined by a rash of new problems threatening to cripple the ongoing efforts by developing nations to reach their targets by 2015, IPS reports. With less than seven years to meet the deadline, the failures seem to far outweigh the limited successes achieved so far. The world water report – supplies falling, tensions rising

As the world continues to urbanize the impact on water resources and the available supply of water for drinking, agriculture, hygiene and industry is dwindling, GLOBE-Net reports. Nations around the world, even those rich in water resources, are facing potential conflicts over the planet’s most important commodity. By 2025, a third of the planet’s population (estimated at 9 billion) could find itself scavenging for safe drinking water, the United Nations warned ahead of last month’s World Water Day (Saturday March 22). HP releases list of top suppliers, announces programme to advance women’s health issues among suppliers

HPHP has publicly detailed its largest suppliers, representing more than 95 percent of HP's procurement expenditures for materials, manufacturing and assembly of HP's products worldwide. Separately, HP announced a pilot programme to empower workers and advance women's health issues among its suppliers.The release of the supplier list, the first by a major technology company, promotes transparency and progress in raising standards in the IT industry supply chain, HP says. HP reports social and environmental progress and goals in fiscal year 2007

HPHP has issued its annual Global Citizenship Report that outlines the company’s progress, as well as challenges, for fiscal year 2007. Among the global citizenship priority areas detailed in the report are energy efficiency of products and operations, supply chain social and environmental responsibility, and product reuse and recycling as well as insights into core areas like social investment and customer privacy. IBM green data center uses innovative technology to heat local public swimming pool

IBMIBM and GIB-Services have announced a new energy efficient "green" data center at a former military bunker outside of Zurich. The new data center will offer a first-of-its-kind energy model where a direct heat exchange will take place between the data center and a public swimming pool in the town. Located in Uitikon, Switzerland, the data center is expected to create 2,800 megawatts of wasted heat per year when operating at full capacity - the same amount of energy needed to supply up to 80 houses with heating and warm water for one year… Read more

Online buzz around sustainability up 50% in 2007

Protecting the environment has become increasingly important to consumers, with online buzz around sustainability growing 50 percent in 2007, Environmental Leader reports. According to research by Nielsen Online, early in the year the discussion was dominated by the topic of global warming, but through the year, bloggers progressively addressed a wider variety of green-related issues, with a particular emphasis on personal action such as recycling, avoiding excess packaging, and carpooling.
