HP Company Foundation commits $250,000 to World Food Programme for relief efforts in Myanmar (Burma)

HPThe Hewlett-Packard Company Foundation has announced it has committed $250,000 to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for aid in the disaster relief efforts in Myanmar (Burma). The HP Company Foundation contribution comes on the heels of an urgent request by the WFP (www.wfp.org), one of only two relief agencies operating in the country, to assist them in their efforts to bring in food, equipment and supplies to those affected by Cyclone Nargis in southern Myanmar. UN Secretary-General urges US business leaders to help fight global poverty

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged members of the US business community to help the United Nations in its efforts to combat global poverty, arguing that this is good for the world and the bottom line. He argued for an approach that promotes self-sufficiency. “Unless the world’s poor become better able to fend for themselves, they – and we – are lost,” he said in a speech in Atlanta on 9 May. Berlin to reward good business conduct

The German government plans to make the country's first trademark for good business behaviour, as a complement to "Made in Germany" as a respected global brand, Financial Times reports.Germany is the world's leading export nation but recognition of the need to combine business with corporate responsibility remains underdeveloped, especially among smaller companies, Olaf Scholz, Germany's labour minister, said.Separately, the top United Nations official responsible for promoting corporate responsibility told the Financial Times that large German companies were lagging behind competitors because they are often "too selfsatisfied" to learn from developing countries or other businesses… Read more

Companies improve scores in climate-change ranking

Consumer companies are getting greener, but more progress is needed, The New York Times reports on the results of the second annual Climate Counts ranking. The nonprofit group scores consumer products companies on on how they measure greenhouse gas emissions, their plans to reduce them and how fully they disclose those activities. Its intention is to persuade consumers to use the scores in deciding which brands to buy. Demographic Risk Map: New online tool shows regional effects of demographic change in European regions

Under the auspices of Commissioner Vladimír Špidla, the new information portal "Demographic Risk Map" was presented on 8 May in Brussels to the general public. It is the first online tool to present the consequences of an aging and shrinking society for selected location factors in 264 regions of the EU-27 through to 2030. The analysis was developed by a Rostock-based research centre in collaboration with the Laboratory Demographic Change. econsense, BASF, Evonik, and SAP, together with other cooperation partners, founded the Laboratory in 2007 to find strategic answers to the challenges of demographic change in Europe's regions… Read more

Survey: Brazil, India have 'greenest' lifestyle, US trails

Inhabitants of Brazil and India have the world's most environmentally-sustainable lifestyle and Americans have the least, according to a new study tracking global attitudes towards consumption and the environment, AFP reports.The survey by the National Geographic Society establishes a "Greendex" - an index measuring the economic impact of consumer lifestyle choices - in four key areas: housing, transportation, food and goods.Researchers noted that the lifestyles of people in developing countries tend to have fewer adverse effects on the environment than people in developed countries… Read more

Slower cuts in greenhouse gases cloud carbon boom

The global carbon market more than doubled in value in 2007 to $64 billion, but that masked slow growth in actual greenhouse gas emissions cuts, the World Bank's carbon finance unit said on Wednesday, Reuters reports. One way industrialized nations can buy carbon offsets is by funding greenhouse gas emissions cuts in developing nations, through a U.N.-led scheme under the Kyoto Protocol. But while trade under Kyoto schemes more than doubled to $13.4 billion in 2007, volumes of actual carbon dioxide cuts made by registered projects grew just 7 percent. Read more. (Source: Reuters)

Business leaders urge G8 government to take action on emerging water crisis

Business leaders representing 19 large corporations have launched an international campaign urging governments of the Group of Eight (G8) countries to address with urgency the emerging global crisis in water and sanitation.In a letter released by the United Nations Global Compact Office, the chief executive officers of 19 companies call on G8 leaders to actively address the issue of water during their upcoming Hokkaido Toyako Summit on 7-9 July in Japan.
