Germany pledges funds for protection of tropical forests

At the UN biodiversity conference in Bonn on Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged billions of euros to support the conservation of tropical rainforests, Spiegel Online reports.Merkel said German funding for rainforests would be increased between 2009 and 2012 by €500 million. Starting in 2013, that amount would be increased to an additional €500 million per year.The destruction of tropical forests is responsible for 20 percent of the world's carbon dioxide emissions and causes the destruction of irreplaceable natural treasures… Read more

Consumer scepticism grows over claims on ethics, UK study says

Consumers have become more sceptical of companies' claims of ethical behaviour, in spite of the focus businesses have put on pushing their environmental and fair trade credentials, Financial Times reports.A UK survey, to be released this week, will show a far higher proportion of consumers saying they felt pressure to buy "ethical" brands - up from 23 per cent to 33 per cent. However, they also have raised expectations of corporate behaviour. Only 18 per cent of the 3,000 adults interviewed believed that business ethics had improved, down from 21 per cent a year ago when the survey was first conducted… Read more

Governor Schwarzenegger and Environmental Defense Fund recognise business leadership in environmental innovation

Environmental sustainability is about saving through efficiency, creating new markets and gaining competitive advantage, says the inaugural report of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a US-based non-profit organisation, with the support of Governor Schwarzenegger and CEOs. The report "Innovations Review 2008: Making Green the New Business as Usual" highlights 20 environmental innovations from around the United States. Two thirds of bosses rarely say ‘yes’ to employee requests to work from home

KPMGThe latest quarterly CIPD/KPMG Labour Market Outlook (LMO) survey of UK employers finds that more than two thirds of employers (69%) never or occasionally accept employee requests to work from home. This is despite the fact that, of the employers who offer home-working, only 8% believe home-workers are less productive than their office-bound colleagues, while 30% say they are more productive. The report concludes that the much-heralded revolution in home-working is yet to take place, although a quarter of employers say that home-working will increase in their organisation in the next year… Read more

Citi publishes 2007 Citizenship Report

Europe seeks greenest city

A competition which will crown one European city the greenest on the continent was launched this week, Edie.net reports. The European Green Capital Award, set up by the European Commission, seeks to promote environmentally-friendly living while recognising the efforts of those cities which are leading the charge. Eco-friendly Brits want to do more

More than half of Brits think they could do more for the environment and only one in 20 class themselves as "green", Edie.net reports on the results of a recent survey by mobile phone company T-Mobile. According to the survey, only a small percentage of people think they are as environmentally friendly as they could be. UK: Index Top 100 companies published by BITC

Germany: Telekom spying accusations 'an enormous scandal'

There has been no shortage of scandals in German businesses lately, but the spying allegations against Deutsche Telekom, say commentators, may be the biggest yet, Der Spiegel reports. Germany's former telecom monopoly Deutsche Telekom has been hit by a spying scandal after the emergence of allegations that it scrutinized the details of employees' and journalists' calls in a bid to track down a leak.
