UK: Food processors cut food miles by sharing transport
A collaboration between leading food manufacturers and retailers aims to reduce the environmental impact of transporting food and groceries in the UK, Food Production Daily reports. The scheme is a direct response to spiraling energy costs as well as demands from consumers for a reduction in the number of food miles incurred in the distribution of products, according to IGD, a food and grocery think-tank. Business in the Community launches Healthy Eating Toolkit
The Business Action on Health campaign has launched a Healthy Eating Toolkit to provide UK employers with practical advice on how to integrate health and wellbeing into their organisation. Developed in partnership with the HR consultancy Towers Perrin and created by the Food & Drink Federation in partnership with Business in the Community (BITC), the toolkit draws on the collective experience of companies such as Cadbury, Kellogg and Tate & Lyle. Alcatel-Lucent to fund advanced technology education and pursue joint research with Portuguese universities
Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it has signed several memorandums of understanding (MOU) with leading Portuguese government, scientific and academic institutions.Two MOUs are with the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia – Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), UMIC (Portuguese Knowledge Society Agency). FTSE launches broad environmental index as eco benchmarks boom
FTSE, the global index company, has launched the FTSE Environmental Opportunities All-Share Index, made up of over 450 companies in the alternative energy, water and waste management sectors, amidst a flurry of activity in the formulation of sustainable indices, Responsible Investor reports. The FTSE index includes companies from its Global Equity Index Series that have a minimum of 20% of revenues sourced from environmental markets or technologies. Intel spins off solar energy technology
To spur new development and demand for renewable energy sources, Intel Corporation is spinning off key assets of a start-up business effort inside Intel's New Business Initiatives group to form an independent company called SpectraWatt Inc.SpectraWatt will manufacture and supply photovoltaic cells to solar module makers. IBM expands water management capabilities with Dublin Centre of Excellence
IBM and the Industrial Development Agency of Ireland (IDA Ireland) have announced the establishment of an IBM Centre of Excellence for Water Management. Located in Dublin, the new facility will focus primarily on innovative research and services for monitoring, managing and forecasting environmental challenges such as the movement of pollutants in fresh water, marine and oceanic environments. IBM announces IT carbon strategy assessment service
IBM has announced a new service, the IT Carbon Strategy Study, to help clients starting on their green transformation identify the most rapid areas of reduction in IT carbon emission across the infrastructure. Part of IBM's Project Big Green initiative, the service enables clients to develop the guiding principles for becoming a greener enterprise and create recommendations for the actions they can take to achieve those goals. Orange receives the APAJH 2008 Socially Responsible Company award
APAJH, a French federation defending the rights of handicapped people, rewarded the Orange (France Telecom Group) for its action in favour of its handicapped customers with the APAJH "Entreprise Citoyenne" award. Solar energy makes Volvo dealers climate-neutral
Volvo Trucks has inaugurated its first climate-neutral dealership facility in Verona, Italy. With the help of solar cells on the building’s roof, more energy will be produced than is needed to heat up the offices and workshops. Solar energy produced at the Volvo Truck Center in Verona will be supplied to the local power grid, thus generating an income from the electricity that the dealership facility itself does not need. In return, the dealership will only purchase green electricity from solar, wind-power or hydro-power sources. Read more (Volvo AB)

ABB rewards energy efficient customers
ABB in Italy has introduced an energy efficiency award for companies who have made the most progress in reducing their energy consumption in motor and drive systems. The inaugural ABB Energy Efficiency award was launched at a ceremony in Milan in May. Three companies were recognized for their efforts and were presented with an ABB plaque - Iveco, TenarisDalmine and Bayer CropScience. The ABB Energy Efficiency award is an automation products initiative in Italy that recognizes customers who make the positive switch to energy efficiency, and use ABB technology to get them there.
