Social entrepreneurs boost non-profit innovation

Over the past decade the not-for-profit sector has become increasingly innovative and efficiency-focused thanks to the rising profile of social enterprises which are set up like businesses but structured to help a wide range of good causes, Times Online reports. EU announces next eco-design product priorities

The European Commission has unveiled a list of ten priority energy-using product groups for which it wants energy-efficiency standards to be established in the next three years, EurActiv reports. According to the Commission's plans, adopted on 21 October, the product groups under investigation will be included in the EU's 2005 Eco-design Directive, which defines binding minimum standards for energy performance. The final list includes such product groups as air-conditioning and ventilating systems as well as food preparation and refrigeration equipment. Read more (EurActiv)

Divided EU wants poor countries to join climate pledge

EU environment ministers want advanced developing states like China and India to "contribute adequately" to emissions reductions as part of a global climate change agreement next year, EurActiv reports. In addition to comparable CO2 reduction commitments by developed states like the US, rapidly developing countries "would have to reduce their emissions by 15 to 30% below business as usual" by 2020 in order for the EU to sign up to a global emissions reductions regime in Copenhagen in December 2009, according to conclusions adopted by EU environment ministers yesterday (20 October) in Luxembourg… Read more

Accor's "Earth Guest Discovery" recognised for responsible approach to incentive travel

Accor's "Earth Guest Discovery" offer, which combines sustainable development and incentive travel, has been awarded with the SNCF Responsible Tourism Award in the "Approach and Strategy" category. The awards were organised for the second consecutive year by the Voyages-sncf.com website. Accor receives Axa Santé Prize for ACT-HIV initiative

Accor has been awarded the AXA Santé Prize for its ACT-HIV programme launched at the end of 2007 as a part of the company's commitment to fight against HIV/AIDS. UNEP plans green version of the New Deal

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a ‘Green New Deal’ initiative, which it hopes will give governments the tools to perform an environmental overhaul of their economies, Environmental Finance reports. Evoking the New Deal which boosted European economies after World War II, the two-year UNEP research programme will produce a report aimed at helping governments to pursue environmentally sustainable growth and jobs.But UNEP also called for governments to take immediate action, such as including measures to encourage a sustainable economy in their bank bail-out packages… Read more

Covalence publishes ethical reputation ranking Q3 2008

Geneva-based Covalence has published its quarterly ethical reputation ranking of multinational companies, giving the best ranked companies as well as those companies which have made the most progress in the 3rd Quarter of 2008. The main results across sectors are: IBM enters top 10 EthicalQuote score across sectors replacing Starbucks; Toyota, Unilever and HSBC lead the way; Kraft Foods and DuPont appear in top 10 best progress category; Wal-Mart, Toyota and Nissan show best Reported Performance.
