New research confirms link between corporate responsibility and improved financial performance

New research released today by Business in the Community (BITC) reveals a statistically significant link between effective management and governance of environmental and social issues and financial performance. Sponsored by Legal & General and undertaken by Ipsos MORI, the research revealed that FTSE companies that actively managed and measured corporate responsibility issues outperformed the FTSE 350 on total shareholder return by between 3.3% and 7.7% throughout the period 2002-2007. The research examined the relationship between total shareholder return and the management of environmental and social impacts in 33 FTSE companies that have measured and managed their corporate responsibility through Business in the Community’s Corporate Responsibility Index (CR Index) in each of its six years… Read more

UK ad watchdog says 94% of green ads comply with regulations

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has released its Environmental Claims Survey 2008, revealing that 94 percent of ads with environmental claims were compliant with the advertising codes, Environmental Leader reports.In May, the ASA said complaints about environmental claims more than doubled year on year with 556 complaints about 408 ads. But the new survey results suggest there is increased awareness among businesses of the rules around green claims in advertising. Read more (Environmental Leader)

Intel recognised as EPA Green Power Partner of the Year

Women falling from executive ranks, Australian study shows

The number of women in executive roles in Australian companies has dropped sharply in the past two years, while only four females head a top 200 firm, AFP reports. A new government-backed study found the number of female executives employed by companies included on the Australian Stock Exchange's ASX 200 index has fallen from 12 percent to 10.7 percent over the past two years. The number of companies with no women executive managers has risen sharply to 45.5 percent, up from 39.5 percent in 2006, the census by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency found… Read more

Australia's Stern review warns of runaway global warming

Carbon pollution levels are rising so fast that the world has no realistic chance of hitting ambitious climate targets set by Britain and the G8, an influential report to the Australian government has warned. The report, from economist Ross Garnaut, says existing carbon goals are based on out-of-date emissions figures, and are so ambitious that they could wreck attempts to agree a new global deal on global warming. Swedish government fund challenges companies on lack of women executives

AP2, the SEK227.5bn (€23bn) Second Swedish National Pension Fund, has launched a campaign to lobby companies which it believes are under representing women within their management and boards, Responsible Investor reports. The fund said it was taking the action after it conducted research of its index portfolio and found that for the first time in ten years the trend for a growing number of women to be appointed to executive and board positions had been broken. Future of green is not so black, say some

The deepening economic crisis may appear to be the perfect storm for environmentalism, but many in and around the green movement contend the opposite, seeing in it a time of opportunity, AFP reports.
