Climate change ‘hits poor hardest’

Sir David Attenborough and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have called on world leaders to do more to protect the poor from the devastating effects of climate change, The Times reports. The two were among 19 signatories of a letter to The Times urging Western countries to “lead the way” at the United Nations climate change summit in Poznan, Poland. With disease, droughts and uncertainty over crops being blamed on global warming, they said it was essential that agreements were reached. Read more (The Times)

Dow helps Simmons create eco-friendly sleep systems

DowGoing beyond organic sheets and pillows made from natural fibers, consumers can get a 'greener' night's sleep with a new line of mattresses from Simmons Bedding Company developed in partnership with Dow Polyurethanes. The manufacturer selected bio-based foam made with natural oil-based polyols created via RENUVA(tm) Renewable Resource Technology from Dow. The process breaks down vegetable oil and functionalizes it to produce a wide range of polyols with high levels of renewable content. IBM, Harvard want your PC for solar power study

IBMScientists at Harvard University and IBM are hoping to harness the power of a million idle computers to develop a new, cheaper form of solar power that could revolutionize the green energy world, Reuters reports. Researchers have launched the project using IBM's World Community Grid, which taps into volunteers' computers across the globe to run calculations on a myriad of compounds - potentially shortening a project that could take 22 years to just two years. Ecoflation, a new worry, could hit consumer goods

Ecoflation -  the rising cost of doing business in a world with a changing climate - could hit consumer goods hard in the next five to 10 years, Reuters reports. According to a report by World Resources Institute and A.T. Kearney, companies that make fast-moving consumer goods could see earnings drop by 13 percent to 31 percent by 2013 and 19 percent to 47 percent by 2018 if they do not adopt sustainable environmental practices, the report said. The costs of global warming are showing up now in the form of worse heat waves, droughts, wildfires and possibly more severe tropical storms but they are not yet reflected in consumer prices, said the institute's Andrew Aulisi after the report's December 2 release… Read more

Slow movement at Poznan climate conference

A U.N. climate conference is starting its second week with attention focused on proposed deals to protect the world's forests and to set new limits on carbon emissions for industrial countries, AP reports. Delegates say progress was slow during the conference's first week in the western Polish city of Poznan.Some 190 countries are trying to resolve issues such as how to raise funds to help developing countries fight global warming and adapt to its effects. Responsible investment database announced

Signatories to the United Nations principles for responsible investment (UNPRI) will next year gain access to a global database showcasing investment research focusing on environmental, social and governance issues, the Financial Times reports.The UNPRI said the move was the first to extend the work of the Enhanced Analytics Initiative following the merger of the two organisations in October. Communities benefit from 1 million Intel volunteer hours in 2008

IntelIn recognition of International Volunteer Day, Intel’s CEO and President Paul Otellini thanked employees for their volunteerism. Intel employees gave of their time in more than 40 countries in 2008, a more than 50 percent increase over 2007. More than 47,000 Intel employees volunteered in 2008, a 16 percent increase over 2007, for nearly 5,500 local schools, community support organizations and other non-profits. Turkey needs to develop CSR policy

A recent event in Brussels staged messages for both the urgent need to redefine basic principles in order to maintain the sustainability of Europe's social model, and also the need for Turkey to quickly catch up with the changing business environment, according to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet. Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, Europe, which has 25 national partner organizations including one in Turkey, launched a toolbox Thursday. US survey: Corporate "green" spending increasing

A survey recently published by Panel Intelligence, LLC, shows that 80 percent of North American corporate sustainability executives plan to maintain or increase "green" spending in 2009 despite the recent economic downturn, GreenBiz reports. The survey also reports that corporate clean technology spending will increase by 73 percent through 2010. Over two thirds of survey respondents believe energy efficiency is the most important area to invest in. Read more (GreenBiz)
