Commission adopts Lisbon Strategy recommendations to build a lasting recovery
The European Commission has adopted "country chapters" and recommendations under the Lisbon Growth and Jobs Strategy to help ensure the European Economic Recovery Plan is implemented in a way that builds for the future as well as responding to the economic crisis. The country chapters analyse progress in each Member State in implementing the Growth and Jobs Strategy, taking account of the crisis, and include proposals for country specific recommendations. EU calls on America to create transatlantic carbon trading scheme
Seeking to seize on the excitement generated by the election of the new US president and hoping to co-opt Barack Obama's green agenda for a powerful alliance to tackle global warming, the European commission called on the Americans to establish a joint carbon trading scheme with Europe modelled on the system operating in the EU since 2005, The Guardian reports. Unveiling the commission's pitch for the crucial round of global climate talks later this year in Copenhagen, Stavros Dimas, the environment commissioner, added that if the new US administration joins the system for auctioning polluting rights, it should then be extended to other industrialised countries and later to the big developing countries, transforming it into a global carbon market by 2020… Read more

Intel Science Talent Search finalists announced
Forty high school seniors from across the US have been named Finalists for the Intel® Science Talent Search 2009, a programme of the Society for Science & the Public. The competition is America's oldest pre-college science competition. The Intel Science Talent search encourages students to tackle challenging scientific questions and develop the skills necessary to solve the problems of tomorrow. The finalists’ independent research projects include topics such as human-seeking robots, revitalizing ecosystems affected by wildfires, implications of gender on stem cell transplants, climate change, and potential cures for Parkinson’s disease and cancer… Read more

ILO: Unemployment, working poor and vulnerable employment to increase dramatically due to global economic crisis
The global economic crisis is expected to lead to a dramatic increase in the number of people joining the ranks of the unemployed, working poor and those in vulnerable employment, the International Labour Office (ILO) says in its annual Global Employment Trends report (GET). Based on new developments in the labour market and depending on the timeliness and effectiveness of recovery efforts, the report says global unemployment in 2009 could increase over 2007 by a range of 18 million to 30 million workers, and more than 50 million if the situation continues to deteriorate… Read more

Brussels to launch new 'green ICT' plan
The European Commission will publish an action plan in March to boost the role of ICT in helping to green the EU economy, but extra effort from the technology industry may be necessary, EurActiv reports. According to estimates by consulting firm McKinsey, widespread use of intelligent devices and applications could reduce global CO2 emissions by as much as 15% by 2020. The reduction would help the Union to achieve ambitious environmental targets agreed in December 2007… Read more

Norwegian companies urged to disclose their sustainability performance
The Norwegian government has launched its first national white paper on corporate social responsibility in a globalised economy. The white paper clarifies the responsibility companies have regarding public reporting on sustainability performance - including human rights, decent working conditions, the environment and anti-corruption. "The Government will propose amendments to the Accounting Act that extend the duty of Norwegian companies to provide information on what they are doing to implement ethical guidelines," said Minister of Trade and Industry Sylvia Brustad… Read more

New report examines how corporate citizenship is organised inside global companies
A new report released by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship confirms that managing a company’s role in society is becoming a formal part of corporate structure and management practice, with many companies internalizing the function into corporate departments and cross functional teams. The Coca-Cola Company to Receive 2009 World Environment Center Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development
The World Environment Center's (WEC) 25th Annual Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development has been awarded to The Coca-Cola Company for implementing strategic business initiatives in the high impact areas of water stewardship, sustainable packaging, energy management and climate protection. Coca-Cola's signature contribution, "returning to nature and communities an amount of water equal to what it uses in all of its beverages and their production", was cited by the independent international Gold jury as an exceptional demonstration of leadership in sustainability… Read more
