Volkswagen signs ‘Global Labor Charter’

VolkswagenOn 29 October 2009 the ‘Global Labor Charter’ was signed by VW Group Board of Management, International Metalworkers' Federation and VW employee representatives. As the first employer, the Volkswagen Group has adopted a "Global Labor Charter". The Charter sets out binding minimum standards for the entire Group in the area of the participation rights of employee representative bodies at the level of individual facilities. Pow! Comic-strip heroes fight against corruption

It is a comic book collection without a cape, dodgy mask or death ray in sight. There are, though, plenty of baddies. The first week of November sees the publication of a new anthology aiming to encourage young people to get interested in - and angry at - corruption in its many forms and guises. The people behind the project are Ctrl.Alt.Shift, which describes itself as an experimental youth initiative. It was set up last year by the international development agency Christian Aid and aims to use art - whether comics, film or music - to create a new generation of activists. Read more (Guardian)

Solar power from Sahara a step closer

A $400bn (£240bn) plan to provide Europe with solar power from the Sahara has moved a step closer to reality with the formation of a consortium of 12 companies to carry out the work. Female entrepreneurs still vastly outnumbered in Europe

As the European Commission pushes for greater gender balance in its own ranks, the EurActiv network takes a look at how women across Europe fare in the business world. Women are increasingly represented in the workplace and major strides have been made in this regard over the past generation. Businesses cashing in on energy savings

Businesses are looking to a new climate deal in Copenhagen to ensure a level playing field for industry, but in the meantime they are pledging to continue improving their energy efficiency and boosting investment in low-carbon technologies. Saving energy makes sense as a business strategy and such investments pay themselves back within a few years, many companies pointed out. GRI NGO and Food Processing Sector Supplements public consultation

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is inviting comments on the final drafts of the NGO and Food Processing Sector Supplements, which are currently under development. A GRI 16-person multi-stakeholder Working Group including Amnesty International, Unilever, Greenpeace, Novartis, Oxfam, Interaction and World Vision drafted sector reporting guidance. GRI and the Working Group are now inviting comments on the draft to make well informed decisions on the final contents of the GRI supplement.
