Twelve women scientists recognized across the developing world
The Elsevier Foundation, TWAS and TWOWS announced on June 27 that they are recognizing twelve talented women scientists from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean for their research excellence. The announcement was made at the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) 4th General Assembly and international conference, Women Scientists in a Changing World, hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing from 27-30 June 2010. France Telecom-Orange signed an agreement creating a Global Works Council
On 23rd June, France Telecom-Orange signed an agreement creating a Global Works Council with employees representatives (Alliance Syndicale Mondiale UNI, delegation from the European Works Council and French Unions). Following the creation of the European Works Council in 2004 and the worldwide agreement in 2006 about fundamental employee rights, the France Telecom group has now created a new body designed to promote social dialogue in every country in which the Group is present. CSR Europe, in collaboration with Econsense, is happy to present the finalized version of their study on Human Rights Impact Assessments. This paper aims to contribute and complement the study commissioned by the EC in giving an overview on how the business community is moving along human rights compliance in their operations. Merck to initiate study of Posaconazole for Chronic Chagas Disease
Merck announced on June 28 plans to initiate a Phase II investigational proof-of-concept clinical study to evaluate its oral antifungal agent posaconazole for the treatment of chronic Chagas disease. Chagas disease results from infection with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi that is spread by biting insects. The disease is estimated to affect approximately eight million people in Latin America, of whom approximately 30-40 percent will develop serious cardiac disease, digestive disease, or both as a result of this infection… Read more

Merck partners on vaccination program for girls and young women of Bhutan
The Royal Government of Bhutan, Merck (which is known as MSD outside the United States and Canada) and the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF) launched in May a six-year national vaccination program with GARDASIL® [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16 and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] for appropriate girls and young women in Bhutan. In an effort to reduce the burden of cervical cancer, which affects more women in Bhutan than any other cancer, girls and young women between the ages of 12 and 18 will be offered vaccination with GARDASIL as part of this initiative… Read more

Dow and BASF receive Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for HPPO Technology
The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) and BASF recently received a 2010 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in Washington, D.C. The two companies were honored for their jointly developed hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) technology that vastly improves the production process of a key chemical intermediate, propylene oxide.
