US study says global sustainable packaging market to reach nearly $143B by 2015
The global market for sustainable packaging is projected to reach $142.42 billion by 2015, according to a report from Global Industry Analysts (GIA). Growth drivers include increased awareness about environmental hazards related to disposal and recycling of packaging wastes, government initiatives to minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and stringent regulations. GIA says sustainability has helped companies cut costs and reduce packaging waste by using recycled and reusable materials. In terms of market segmentation, the recycled material accounts for the largest packaging category, contributing nearly 90 percent to the total demand in the United States… Read more

Executives, consumers doubt most companies really going green, a US report finds
Only 29 percent of Fortune 1000 executives and 16 percent of consumers feel a majority of companies are committed to adopting more environmentally friendly business practices, products or services, according to the 2010 Gibbs & Soell Sense & Sustainability Study. Transport sector's green efforts stuck in the slow lane, report says
The transport industry was on august 12 urged to step up efforts to curb carbon emissions, after new research revealed the majority of firms in the sector have failed to implement climate change strategies. The report, from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), found that only 36 per cent of transport firms have implemented carbon-reduction plans, compared to 51 per cent of Global 500 firms across all sectors. The CDP said the failure of transport firms to address climate change risks is startling, given that the transport industry accounts for 13 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and 60 per cent of oil consumption in high-income countries… Read more

SAP releases sustainability update including carbon for the second quarter
SAP AG released its quarterly sustainability update with a preliminary, unaudited CO2 emissions report for the second quarter ending June 30, 2010. The company's worldwide CO2 emissions slightly decreased to 115 kilotonnes from 120 kilotonnes in the previous quarter. Despite a surge in business travel prompted by the economic recovery, SAP was able to lower its overall carbon footprint in the second quarter from the levels of the first quarter by reducing its energy consumption and increasing the purchase of renewable electricity… Read more

Water recycling increase carbon emissions, study says
The Environment Agency report claims while rainwater harvesting (RWH) and greywater recycling (GWR) systems may reduce water use, in most cases they result in significantly increased carbon emissions. It calculates a typical rainwater harvesting system has a carbon intensity some 40% higher than mains water. Equivalent greywater recycling needs twice the energy used to supply cleans mains water. It also suggests there is scope to cut the carbon footprint of these systems through use of more efficient technologies. Read more (Source: edie)
