EU's responsible sourcing initiative enters public consultation phase
The EU is working on an initiative on the "responsible sourcing of minerals originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas." Now in a phase of public consultation, the EU is inviting all interested parties to share their views on the potential policy, which would address the supply of minerals coming from war zones and areas of instability or unrest, among others.After the consultation is complete the EU will take the feedback into consideration in deciding how best to formulate policy regarding due diligence initiatives and support for good governance in mineral mining… Read more

Automotive companies join forces in new European Working Group to strengthen sustainability efforts in the supply chain
Brussels, 4 April 2013 – A group of automotive manufacturers – BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Toyota Motor Europe, Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Volvo Cars and Volvo Group – in addition to their own efforts - have joined forces to collaborate on improving supply chain sustainability. EC creates "tips and tricks" guide for SMEs
The European Commission (EC) has recently developed a "CSR handbook for small business advisers" which is designed to act as a reference when making decisions on how to adapt business to current CSR guidelines. The publication draws on a wealth of existing expertise gained from consulting about 100 SME advisers, which in its collated form will "improve the quality and quantity of CSR advice available to SMEs."SMEs account for the most common form of enterprises throughout Europe. NYSE Euronext and Vigeo launch ESG indices

CSR Europe interviews Lieve Fransen, Director of DG Employment at the European Commission
At last year's Enterprise 2020 Summit, Lieve Fransen, Director of DG Employment at the European Commission, spoke to CSR Europe about the challenges of the economic crisis and an ageing population and the need for increased job creation, entrepreneurship and skills training to tackle these issues. Social inclusion was also a key topic touched in the interview, whether for women or disabled persons, which requires increased collaboration between governmental institutions and businesses.

Intel employees volunteer to promote online safety for kids
On February 4 to mark Safer Internet Day in Europe a new portal was launched for Intel volunteers. The portal presented volunteers with everything needed to teach kids how to be safer on-line. The portal also includes a fun e-quiz designed for students from 6 -12 years old to reinforce the lessons they’ve learned.Each curriculum kit includes an updated presentation, videos, questions and answers, detailed speaking notes, instructions for the volunteer, and more.
